So if I had to pick between Texas Roadhouse and Longhorn for a generic chain steak experience, which one?

Ribeye is 100% what I'll get.

Texas Road House is good too. I don't mind a Choice cut if it's actually good and prepared well. I'm sure LongHorn and TRH all vary as much as other chains across the country.

Now, if you want to spend some $$$$, the absolute best steak and restaurant experience I've ever had was at this place in Troy MI:

They have an actual movie-style maitre d, the waiter is more like a butler than anything else, and every single thing they put on the table made my eyes bug out in absolute amazement. I took my wife there for our anniversary, and the bill came to $400 ($300 and I tipped $100), but we'll never forget the experience. The waiter put a rose under the table and slipped it in my hand to give my wife when we were being seated, he put rose petals on the table and had the staff sign a card to us, then they put free desserts in front of us at the end of the meal. Incredible:

Now I just need a $10000 searing oven to make steaks like they do

Omg.....

I could eat a bucket of that easily.

Both are similar. Just cook at home. You can do better.

That is true. I have to order a cast iron skillet, I lost mine in my last move. Will just get a Lodge. Been a while since I cooked steaks in a cast iron properly.

But I want to meet my buddies out for dinner soon so I will have it be at a regular ole' steakhouse where you can get a ribeye for under 30 clams. FIgured I'd try one of those places.

This will depend on the individual restaurants in question although as mentioned I slightly prefer Texas Roadhouse if all things are equal.

Hit Google reviews and/or Yelp (be sure to sort reviews by date!) and read the one/two star reviews especially for your answer.

Longhorn is in roughly the same quality category as Texas Roadhouse for steaks IME although the Longhorn located near me in North Haven CT is a bit below par... personally I'd give TR the (slight) edge.

Try Joseph's Steakhouse in Bridgeport, it's the best steakhouse in Connecticut. The guy who owns it used to work at Peter Luger in NYC, and it shows. It's not cheap, but if you're already planning on spending Ruth Chris money... go for it.

MAX Downtown in Hartford is also super good, but it's insanely expensive!

Ruth Chris also participated in Connecticut Restaurant Week, so you CAN get a meal from them that week for the same price as Longhorn. They didn't do it last year because of COVID, but it should be back soon.

Pegging kitchen overlord @Kaido

Sous Vide + Cast-iron skillet + Bayou burner. I can easily hit 1000F with that setup. Although 550F to 700F is a better range. I don't buy steak out anymore, it's too easy & too good sous-vide & seared. Burgers are the same way. Sous-vide + cast-iron sear, easy peasy. SUPER low effort & comes out awesome every time. I use a Searzall torch to melt the cheese. My active hands-on time is about 5 minutes lol (load SV machine, let cook for an hour or two, then sear & torch).

Costco Wagyu SV:

I used to like both of them, a long time ago.

When I first moved to Manassas in 2008 my mom dragged me to Logans Roadhouse and I had my first and only PERFECT steak.
That is a feat which has not been repeated since.
In fact, over the years the quality slow dropped to the point where they are roughly equal to Applebees or Ruby Tuesday. Which is pretty fuckin sad.
Their prices have gone up too.

Oh, between Texas and Longhorn, I pick Texas. Slightly better meat. Better sides. Usually better service.

I've eaten at Ruth's Chris, and it was good, Can't say I remember anything negative about the restaurant.

That being said, I like Doe's Eat Place more. There's several reasons why, but mainly because it's, the same quality meat (yes, it's aged Prime}, and a better atmosphere (for me). An added bonus is that it's generally free of the types that eat there because it's expensive (Doe's is MUCH less expensive). There are a few franchised locations spread in the south and mid-south area nowadays, but far from a national chain. If you have the chance, give it a whirl.

Yeah...as a former Texan, I know that steaks are easy to cook, and I make awesome steaks when I have the time (not hard at all). The thing is, that I don't always have the time, and sometimes it's just too easy to let someone else do all the work.

I can't verify for sure, but according to a 2010 article I found

Doe's only sells the top 12% of beef by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grading standards. The top 12% is a mixture of USDA Prime and the top tier of USDA Choice beef.

So it's still good quality beef, but it could still be USDA choice and it wont always be USDA prime.

Man, I'm doing a 2 day per week fasting diet. Today I'm fasting. And was stupid enough to read this thread. Now all I can think about is a juicy prime ribeye.

OH, I have one recommendation in relation to Wagyu. Try the Wagyu ground beef which is now selling at many supermarkets, for homemade burgers. Very, very tasty and it's usually on sale for ~$6/lb.
I've eyeballed it a few times, but haven't taken the plunge yet. I suppose at worst I feel like I wasted a few bucks...

the meat was fantastic and also it was cooked to perfection. I ordered medium and it came out medium and the flavor was better than it has ever been before.

Over the years the quality of their beef has gone down, and more and more frequently its cooked imperfectly. I finally stopped going to Logans entirely in 2018.
I really miss that first steak.

Oh, and Outback has NEVER had really good steaks. Despite their name.

Not sure if that article was correct. Doe's of Fayetteville advertises USDA Prime, 21 day aged, and has advertised it as such for as long as I can remember. Copied from their web page.

"Doe´s Eat Place has been dubbed the place where the best steaks in the world are served. Come and enjoy our World Famous Delta Style hot tamales, succulent shrimp, and 100% USDA Prime Beef steaks."

Home - Meat me at Doe's! (doesnwa.com)

The franchises have to serve the same cuts by contract, and the Doe's in Bentonville repeats "100 percent USDA Prime". I've eaten at that one as well after hitting the trails, both figuratively (fun!) and literally+stitches (not as fun). The steaks were the same.

The only expensive steakhouse I've been to was a Charley's in Florida. I enjoyed it - I think I got a filet mignon.
The steak literally melted in my mouth, which I always thought was BS, so that was pretty cool.
ok, because of you, i had the 12oz filet mignon ($70) instead of my usual 18oz ribeye ($60) at the steak place called Prime Rib.

ordered it medium.
it was soft and tender but wasnt melt in my mouth.
and i thought the ribeye tasted better

Medium?! Rare is the only way to go! Medium rare would be fine but no higher than that.

Been to "fair" amount of fancy/highend/world class restaurants, it is sure for the experience than the "steak".
