So I have some wonkiness to report which may be related to the X3D issues ASROCK's been having. The system booted fine with FCLK 2200 so I was like, hey, let's try 2233. What's the worst that could happen? I wish I hadn't. It refused to boot. It would power up but it would appear to be dead. Only some mobo LEDs were on but the AIO pump and fans were running at really low speed with no noise (could even have been off. Didn't check).

So after a few patient reboots and a cold start by taking out the power plug from the PSU, I was left with no choice but to reset the CMOS. Take out the power plug from the PSU again (as instructed in manual), short the relevant pins for 3 seconds or more, turn the PC on, fully expecting it to work now and...NOTHING. Same as before. Now I was seriously worried. Did I manage to fry the CPU??? Few more restarts and nothing. Took out the power plug again, back in and it finally came to life with BIOS defaults loaded. Phew. That was a BAD experience. Usually my ASROCK Z790 mobo is able to show a message saying that system failed to boot and that is what I was expecting here too.

This was pretty frustrating and anyone with less patience than me would just declare the system dead and RMA it.

Does anyone know if the factory that churned out those three 9950X3D cpu's sent any to the United States? I haven't seen stock in many days.

Camp outside a Microcenter I guess? Or pay someone who lives near a Microcenter to grab one for you.

I wasn't expecting mine to suddenly show up in my search at the price I paid. Simply had no chance to say no.

I seem to be having some issues with my X3D build, most likely self-inflicted ones.

I used GX-14 paste but probably not enough of it because it was hard to apply.

I used a contact frame to prevent paste spillage but it's some unknown Chinese made. I suspect it's made of brass instead of copper (too light and backside was greenish). It may also be about 0.5 or 1mm higher than the IHS so it could be preventing the AIO baseplate from making proper contact with the IHS surface.

There is no AIO pump header on the mobo so I attached it to the Chassis fan header and set its mode to PWM as instructed in the manual.

Both fans of the 240mm AIO are attached to one CPU fan header and they are extremely noisy, to the point where they remind me of those "wonderful" employees who shout more about the work they are doing and actually do a lot less.

The CPU easily hits 85C in almost any workload.

Turning the AC on netted me roughly 1500 extra points in the V-ray 1 min benchmark but all core speed still didn't exceed 3.55 GHz, though it does hit 5.2 GHz in light workloads.

Other than the crap AIO and possible thermal paste issues, is there any BIOS setting I need to change to let the CPU "fly"?

Is this your first Zen 5 ? The default for the 9950x is 95c, no matter what cooling you have. That is get the highest performance. In the bios, you can set it lower.

Now fast forward to your CPU. Not sure, others can respond.

Yeah first and probably ONLY Zen 5

The BIOS default is 85C and the BIOS only has option to reduce TJmax, not increase it (at least in the tweaking section). I didn't venture into the AMD CBS section yet. I see on the official CPU page that the max is 95C so the BIOS is limiting the CPU for safety reasons, I guess?

Maybe my next step should be trying out Ryzen Master?

Man, it's so funny that attempting to cheap out to save money actually costs more in the end. When the display goes off after 15 min (default power plan behavior), the AIO fans actually get louder for a minute or two! What the frickety frackety frock!

I'm not sure if ASROCK has a graphical fan curve thingy like that. Will have to check.

But that's to keep the noise down, right? Won't help keeping the CPU cool and hit higher boost speeds or all core speeds, right?

AIOs can easily cool way more than these processors put out. Typically 75-100w per 120mm. (more with raging fans) With moderate airflow they just have way more c/w than you need.

Pump speed generally does not matter but they have a sweet spot where they make less noise. Like a harmonic point. Typically at 2/3rds. Running a pump too low can cause startup problems and noise as it is unable to clear air bubbles. Too high and you can hear them.

The most annoying noise is a change in noise.

I really need to do this on my home PC. I am tired of hearing my AIO spin up the fans when the CPU temps are, like in 40s C...
I didn't do anything special with the Deepcool 240 AIO in my 245KF PC and everything in BIOS is at defaults. I guess the better chipset and slightly higher price buys lesser annoyance in terms of AIO management? It is nowhere near as obnoxiously loud as this Cougar Poseidon 240 one.

I have a more pedestrian AIO, forgot the model, definitely not 240 mm fans. But I do have an option to customize the fan speed curve, I just did not have the time to fiddle with it. Or perhaps (another possibility) it somehow reset itself to default.

TLDW the following video = PICNIC. User can claim whatever they want. Anyone that has done break/fix knows the client is full of đź’© most of the time. Steve approaches it as being a real issue which is damned cool of him. Homie made up that story and posted it because he knew everyone would say to hit up Steve. I think the user could not get an RMA because they bent the pin, and knew it.

Anyways, ASRock seems to have solved the problem on their end with the 9 series 3D. Experience leads me to conclude the few reports still coming in are exactly what happened here.
