I recently purchased a cyberhome dvd recorder. I was not 100%satisfied with it so I returned it. Nevertheless there was one aspect of the unit that I miss. It's availity to take and s-video signal and output it to component video. This improve my picture and now that I no longer have it...I do see a reduction in quality.

Wich takes me to my question... is there an inexpensive way to obtain the same results?

thanks

I have no idea what you are talking about.

S-Video will give you a phenominal increase in picture quality when compared to component video, so that part i dont understand.

What are you using "now"?

btw welcome to the forums.

Technically, s-video is a form of component video because it carries chrominance and luminance information with two separate signals, but component (YPbPr) is definately superior and transmits the picture information in a luminance and phase-opposite chrominance pair over three coax cables. You must be refering to simple COMPOSITE (rca) type connectors, which are of course inferior to both.

You can get two types of cables to

(a) convert S-video to component (Y, Pb, Pr) video (three RCA jacks at end)

or

(b) convert S-video to composite video (one RCA jack at end)

You can get them at Radio Shack for around $15-30 CDN. Both were six footers I believe.

I think you're thinking of composite video, not component.

short answer: you probably lost that extra quality when you returned the DVD recorder.

long answer: the increase in quality that you were seeing probably wasn't the simple result of putting the s-video signal through a component connection. ie, whatever your s-video source that you were running through the dvd recorder outputs a certain level of quality. using a radioshack adapter to just change the cable medium is probably not going to change that level of quality. the dvd recorder, on the other hand, probably had some sort of scaling chip inside. i think it's likely that the dvd recorder was using its progressive scan capability on your s-video source to upgrade the quality through scaling. so basically, you won't be able to reattain the same level of quality from this s-video source unless you replace your recorder with a dvd player or other HT component with equivalent scaling capabilities.

makes sense to me, anyone agree or disagree

You won't be taking anything (input speaking) because your dvd will either output s-video, composite, or component-or all three.

Your dvd will not take an input and convert it to another.

Your post makes no sense.
