you wont find a recorded copy of this probably because it is like a 15th century tune, but the lyrics say" a silver swan, when living had no note, when dead arrive, unlock her silent throat. and leaning her head against the reedy shore thus sang and sang no more. oh death come close my eyes, more geese than swans now live, more fools than wise".
For some reason, GallowsPole-led zeppelin comes to mind.

my favorite sad songs include:

wilson phillips- you're in love
breathe- hands to heaven
breathe- how can I fall
britney spears- sometimes
roxette- it must have been love (but it's over now)

for some reason everytime I hear these songs I want to shoot myself in the face.

Anybody ever see Ken Burns' Civil War series? In the series, a letter supposedly written by a soldier named Sullivan Ballou (who later died in the war) to his wife and children is read while the song "Ashokan Farewell" plays in the background. The song is a very haunting melody played on the fiddle/violin.

By the way, there are a number of Beatles songs that fit the bill... "In My Life" and "For No One" spring to mind.

<< Another Cat Stevens one is "Cats in the Cradle" >>

Harry Chapin wrote that. Also for REALLY sad try "Cory's Coming" by Harry.

A lot of good ones here... I agree with so many.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot

and

With ot Without You by U2 makes me cry for personal reasons.

You might like "I'm not Supposed to Care" by Gordon Lightfoot, definitely a sad song. BTW, Song For Adam is a great chioce. Jimmy Buffet's "Come Monday" has a bit of a yearning quality to it, and Aerosmith's "Angie" is along those lines. I can't quite put my finger on why, but Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" always seems a bit sad to me as well. Hope it helps a little.

EDIT: The original song that Pearl Jam covered to make "Lask Kiss" was, IMHO, better and was titled "Where oh Where can my Baby Be", I forget the artists.

Come on people..
How can Britney Spear's even rate a mention in this thread?? She can't sing for crap and her songs aren't sad, they are mindless lyrics thought up by some marketing people.... just cos the girl looks half decent, people have to say that she can sing, jeez!!!
