No they really aren't. You could ask 100,000 people if they've ever heard of them, or 10,000,000 for that matter, and no one would know what you're talking about.

Okay, if you say so. Check this forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo-reviews-owners-lounges/

Bottom line is that the top customizers/resellers in the US are XoticPC, Malibal and Power Notebooks. But feel free to think what you want. If you're suggesting they're not a brand name like Dell or something, of course they aren't - but that's not their business model. No laptop customizing service would be well known to your average lay person, even Xoticpc, which is the largest.

What are you disagreeing about ? I know what they are. They aren't one of the largest purveyors of laptops, and "customizing" means different things to different people. These Sager products and the like actually seem more generic to me than mass market companies' products, they're only superficially "customizable", whereas a product like a Macbook Air or HP Envy actually are highly engineered "custom" designs.

And my point, which is just speculation, is that sales of these brands by these small sellers is much more prevalent in the western states, or perhaps in other high tech corridors, where 'tech types' feel the need to get something different than the big brands that the unwashed masses buy.

Note I said different, not better, that's just my opinion. In the case of laptops and the like, the extra engineering that large companies bring to the table makes for better products.

No, but they are among the 3 largest resellers of customized laptop chassis. My initial point was to dispute the suggestion that no one would have ever heard of them. I certainly have. While, say, my GF would not have, nor would she know what the hell Gigabyte is, though they make tons of PC components. I get what you're saying - your average, non-tech guy or gal would know dell and HP but not Power Notebooks. Power notebooks is not a brand, however, they're more like a computer repair shop.

To your other points, Clevo (Sager) is actually the largest ODM laptop manufacturer in the world. It's little known, but read this: http://www.xoticpc.com/who-really-makes-laptops-the-industries-best-kept-secret-a-47.html

So the suggestion that there is "extra engineering" because it comes from Dell or HP is somewhat off. Virtually all laptops in the world come out of two companies - Clevo and Compal. Alienware, for example, just takes a clevo barebone gaming machine and slaps some additional plastic on it for the outer shell and then charges you more for it. Compal does all of HP's work, including the Envy. I don't know who does Apple's; they might be one of the few that does their own laptops.

So Sager's not better - it's just, typically, a more powerful laptop at a less expensive price because it's a no frills chassis.

Nope.

Just because Sager's laptops might come from the same contract manufacturer as some of the big brands, does not mean they are comparable in value or features.

Each of the big brands specifies in great detail - the design, and specifications of the computers they want manufactured for them. This detail goes all the way down to the chip and circuit board level. The design, engineering, testing, QA, compatibility, and support responsibilities all fall on the big brand company. The contract manufacturer's responsibility is limited to making sure that the finished products meet the exact specifications of the purchase request - that's it...

As has already been said, you could talk to 100,000 people in the US and not run into a single person who heard of one of the "customizing" companies you area talking about.

Well most users here are not part of the 100,000 users you refer to..the typical 'best-buy' crowd...anyway,
I just recieved my new 2nd gen Intel cpu/ssd notebook ordered via powernotebooks and it was a refreshing experience. PowerNotebooks is a first-rate business and I soon learned one of the few remaining that understand that personal service is what makes a company great. My order received personal attention from start to finish, including changing the order the day after it went to production. I also take comfort from what I have read about others' experience with their service, which effectively picks up where the manufacturer leaves off or falls short. In numerous cases according to the reviews they happily resolved customer issues when the manufacturer was willing to let things slide through the cracks via outsourced/overseas tech-support. That kind of service is worth paying extra for, but they happily provide it as a standard part of doing business...a happy customer is a returning customer. end of story

Thanks all

Worlds best badly built comedy suitcases maybe.

Badly built? I just recieved my Sager and there's nothing 'badly built' about it, it's built/ordered using the latest 2nd gen leading edge hardware and leans more towards tank-like in construction. It would only be 'badly built' if you custom ordered it that way.
