All peep with 830 series drives ,, 120gb 256gb 480gb and 512Gb worth over 700 hundred dollars.

I have to wait until the 512GB is ,, 1 dollar per gb,,

It doesnt make sense to spend 700 dollars on storage, but I know its worth it. My dads rig is sick , a-data 120GB 375mbps on sata3 , gets 7.5 WEI

830 series owners post a shot of your Crystal , Which SSD goes to 575mbps the Sammy series from what I know is 505mbps seq read.....

Does any of the 830 series get a 7.9 hard disk score in WEI ,

thx

To base your decision on WEI is silly. Just look at the reviews here and other websites. Of course 'hands on' experience is also something to consider. I have the 256GB Samsung 830 and it scores 7.9 on WEI. It feels 'peppier' than my M4 256GB as well.

My 256 Samsung 830 gets a 7.9 in Windows Experience Index. It is my first SSD, so I just let Samsung Magician wizard do all the changes it recommended for my O/S settings.

I have an 830 in my work laptop. It's very, very fast.

I also use an 830 for SRT cache for my home system. It works out pretty well there too.

Replaced a mechanical Toshiba in my laptop with the 128GB version. Huge difference, even though it's limited to Sata 3Gb/s. Pretty stable, no noticeable effect on power consumption.
Also found quite a good deal (180€ for the 256GB on Amazon.de, but don't bother checking - it's gone) and I'm waiting for it to arrive. It's worth it even at its regular price, though.

Something of note: I have called Samsung support a few times (before buying and after buying) and they answered the phone quickly each time (after going through menues there was no wait) and they were nice.

Even my Corsair F180GT Sata III scores 7.9 on WEI and so do most other modern SSDs like M4.

830 is a bit faster, but most modern SSDs which are 120+ GB score 7.9

Why are you so concerned about the WEI Score? The Sammy's and M4's are great drives and so fast.

The fact tweakboy is so concerned with the WEI score and is probably the primary factor in his choice of SSD tells you everything you need to know about tweakboy.

In this thread you are saying you are waiting for the price to drop further, yet in this thread you claim to already have it.

If I may add, it looks like you're looking at his signature. The 512GB drive in his signature is a different color and says "future", which looks like he's either planning to buy it, or considering it.

The fact that he put it in his signature and doesn't even have it and that he's basing his decision at least partly on WEI tells you all you need to know. Either he's an innocent ill-informed consumer, or he may just be an adolescent.

Either way, WEI was sort of set up for people that aren't really techy. It's not entirely inaccurate, it's just not what most users here want to know, or care about. It's intended to be a baseline, maybe even a ballpark indicator of your hardware. I think it's perfect for, say, 85 y/o grandma that doesn't seem to understand why she can't play her new 3D Hearts/Chess game

Otherwise, for people that actually need performance, they need to be educated on what to expect.

When it comes to SSDs you should be more worried about compliancy, consistency, security, and integrity. Almost all named drives here, that Anand reviews, meet some general performance and battery life standard that are mostly equivalent. The differences these days are really trivial and intended more for users that want to get the absolute best out of their system, which in many cases might save you 1-10 seconds depending on the task

When he made that thread his signature did not say future after it because I remember reading it at the time and thinking "finally, he's bought one". Now it turns out he hasn't, until next week. Either way I agree with your post.

Haha..."finally". Maybe you forced him to update it.

I kind of side with him, though, regarding costs. I'm still waiting on prices to fall, thought my expectations are a little more aggressive than his. I really want to see 1 TB SSDs with the performance of today at around ~$200-250 (the price of a 250GB drive). The prices today is $1USD/GB versus what I really want for massive adoption, which is $0.25USD/GB.

There are still people I work with that don't really know what an SSD is - not the techies, but the average user. My guess is that R&D was initially really expensive, but iterations since aren't as expensive and the cost of the materials themselves don't cost as much; sure the fabrication plants cost a lot, but they're often re-purposed. I'm eager to see where we'll be 4 years from now

Current market rates is closer to ¢75/gb on 256gb ssd's, but that's still a far cry from what you desire. They've made some good progress recently, however.

Just installed ACDSee5 today and tested thumbnail creation on my drives on my new system. The numbers were very consistent.

Samsung 830 128MB 6GBPs: 10 sec
Intel X25M-G2 80GB 3GBps: 18 sec
RAID 1 HDD Seagate 500GB 7200.10: 30 sec
WD Caviar Black 1TB: 34 sec
RAM Drive: 9 sec

Surprised how much faster it was compared to the Intel (this, after all, is quite real world). Though the Intels had pretty slow write speeds. I recently sold my Sandisk Ultra and Agility3. Will prob buy a few more SSDs to put in my GFs system. The prices are getting addictive! Prob will get a bunch once 240+ drives for $175. Want to try a Sandforce someday too as I've been avoiding those like the plague!

Intel 80 GB only has 60 MB/s write speed. So yeah this test is probably not the best for that drive. But the 64 GB m4 in my parents PC sure feels snappier than my 80 GB G2 so yeah I think that test is correct.

x25m g2 80gb was a great ssd. I didn't notice that much of a difference when going from the x25m g2 to a 256gb m4, but when I put 2 x 256gb m4's in RAID0 the difference became truly noticeable. I'm curious how I'll feel about my work rig after I put the x25m g2 into it next week.
