Samsung 840 Pro bricked?

So I replaced my older Intel SSD with a new Samsung 840 Pro (128 GB) yesterday. I did a fresh install and things went fine, and it ran stable. I left it running overnight and it ran fine this morning. I shut it down this afternoon to install a new HDD in place of the existing photo/back up drive. Fired it back up and…nothing! Got a message to choose a bootable drive or install media to boot from. Checked the BIOS and everything reported correctly; all drives accurately identified and correct boot order. Boot with recovery disk would not recognize the drive to restore it from the image either. Put the old SSD back in and it booted right up and recognized the HDD with no issues. Put the Samsung back in and same deal. So has this thing bricked itself in less than 24 hours?

If you put the Intel back in and boot from it, can you see and access the Samsung drive in Windows?

My first guess is that the Windows install put the MBR on the wrong drive.

Don’t have enough experience to have considered this, but it correlates with the symptoms. System rebooted numerous times during installs, but stopped when the E: drive was removed. One thing also is that I was unable to choose the E: drive for backup. I just put the 840 back in as an additional drive and it was recognized and added as F:, and I can read the files on it. Fixable or do I just have to start over? I can put the original E: drive back and it has not been reformatted. Thanks a million for your reply.

Try booting the computer with just the new SSD and the windows install dvd. If you let it search for problems, it should be able to make the repair for you.

Didn’t work. It wants me to insert the disk with the drivers for the device on it, but there is not one. I don’t know which files to burn on a CD to give it what it wants. Interestingly, it shows the OS Drive C: and a separate Boot Drive X: even though the E: drive is not installed. For now I just put the original E: back in and it starts and runs.

What did Windows say? It didn't find any errors? Or it couldn't fix the errors it found. You may have to do a fresh install. Again.

yep.. this happens a lot and sounds like Windows put the MBR on the other drive rather than the SSD.

Like ketchup already said.. if the install disc can't repair the install.. you will need to reinstall once more with ONLY the SSD drive in the machine. There are other ways to do it as well.. but it gets far more complicated and isn't much faster than a fresh install anyways.
