Which of these two monitors has the better image? I have heard great things coming from both of these. Also, the price on both is the same. Which one should i go for? Thanks.

Wow, you guys are quick.

I have also heard that there are some minor geometry problems with the 900NF. Is this something to worry about? also i heard over at sharkforums that the monitor emits a burning plastic smell. What's up with that? thanks.

ALL flat monitors have some kind of geometry problems, so there shouldnt be anything to worry about. Never heard of the smell thing you're talking about.

Yeah, I am. 1.04mbit SDSL. When I replied, your reply wasn't there yet. I typed it in and posted it, but I guess it was just a tad too slow.

The smell thing is common with new monitors. It's just a smell of a "new" monitor.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I forgot to tell you my main use for the monitor. I mainly play games with my computer (counterstrike, quake 3 etc). surfing, word processing all come in second. The 900NF will still be the choice over the PF790 for gaming am i correct?

I personally hate aperture grille, so I can't comment on which would be better...

I do however own a Samsung 750p and can comment on the "burning plastic smell".

It took a while, maybe 2 weeks tops I think (whereas other monitors' burning smells went away within a few days or didn't have one to begin with), but the smell completely went away.

WHAM! BAM! SAM... sung... hehehe another score for Samsung! Damn they making some good monitors these days. I was taking a look at my friends Samsung the other day, it wasn't the 900NF model, the one lower... forgot the model, had a D in it. Anyway, it looks like the geometry problems weren't as bad as the ones on my Hitachi CM771's. And damn, the Hitachi's were more expensive...

Hehe, I'm going to seem like I entered rant mode again... (yes I know I will use MANY MANY MANY run on sentences in rant mode especially with parentheses.)

I went with the 750p because it had little if any geometric distortion(this seems to be a generalization for good shadow mask tubes, they have good geometry, but lack the contrast, saturation, and sometimes sharpness of aperture grille tubes). I was very fed up at the time with the deluge of 17"/19" aperture grille monitors I checked out (Mitsubishi, Sony, Iiyama, Viewsonic), all of which had HORRIBLE(if the lines at the sides of the image were straight, then the sides in the center of the image were warped! If you set contrast to min, and brightness to max, you could SEE that the outline of the image was not straight and could not be adjusted to be straight no matter what, corner geometry was especially disturbing since few monitors except the Mitsubishi's had controls for those but the Mitsubishi's had dark corners because of the way they got their screens to be flat...) geometric problems. Heck one of the Sony's even developed a "vertical damper wire" type of defect after a few days (this is normally seen in older Aperture Grille tubes, after a FEW YEARS). I'm still convinced that no good 17"/19" aperture grille tubes have been made since 1995. Sheesh...where's the quality control these days...yields and quotas have let too many bad wheels out of the factory...

If anyone has some still sealed in the box Sony monitors like the 420PS from circa 1995, by all means PM me

aah. I have a few more concerns! How bad are the two horizontal grey lines that run accross the 900NF? Are they like really noticeable? Also, i've heard that there are problems with brightness and dimming problems with the montor. Something along the lines of:

'Whenever i open and close a window, i notice the brightness of the background brightens or dims noticeably.'

Anyone experience any of this? Thanks again for all the help. much appreciated.

The horizontal lines are very noticable when viewed with bright backgrounds, however when you get use to it you wont notice them at all, I've totally forgotten about these lines, so did many people who use AG monitors. As to that brighten and dims, I think all AG monitors do that to some extent, some less, some more, but I have not seen the 900NF suffer this severely.

Samsung 900NF. Be sure to get BNC cables also....it made a big difference for me at 1600x1200

Another PF790 vote here...just got mine as part of an awesome Amazon deal (+ a $50 rebate). It's geometry is every bit as good as my G400 Sony at work.

We have non-flat screen Samsungs in the lab and they have been OK.

I haven't seen the 900NF.

3 points for the original poster:

1. Your video card will be important as well.

2. Be sure to get to a store and take a good look at an AG screen. The thin horizontal lines don't bother me at all, but they drive some people *crazy*.

3. With regards to specs, try to get the opportunity to fiddle with someone else's 19 inch monitor. I run all of the 19-inchers at 1280 x 1024 (at 90Hz on the PF790). Depending on your eyes you may not be comfortable at 1600 x 1200, which makes some of those higher end specs moot. I actually found the higher refresh rates on my work Sony to be annoying and currently run it at 85 Hz.

As I'm sure you've noticed, picking a monitor is far from objective and picking one that you can't tweak to your satisfaction is painful in more ways than one!

Enjoy! I just got my new PF790 last week and it's really like having a new computer. Alright, so I also swapped in a MSI Pro 2A + 1 Ghz Tbird...wheeeee.

Happy New Year,

Fraz

Well, i am upgrading from an acer 76E monitor. I've seen the PF790 and it looks pretty good to me. I will not have a chance to see the 900NF (because no stores in toronto have it on display). I think if i got the PF790 i wouldn't mind having it at all. So, you guys are saying that the 900NF wins hands down over the pf790? I cannot return the monitor upon opening it, therefore it's important i get the right one. thanks =)

I'd say go for the Samsung, just went to Fry's Electronics, and saw PF790 again, looks sweet, but not good enough to match 900NF. Plus the higher specs and BNC/D-Sub inputs, its all over the PF790.
