Samsung 960 EVO VS PRO

Going to be getting one of these in 512GB size for my OS/apps drive for a new build.

Should i save some cash and go for the EVO or is the PRO worth it?

Ive seen the benches im looking for some input from people who have used both, is the pro noticeably faster in day to day tasks?

Im sure either is alot faster than my current SSD(intel 120GB x-25 G2)

Currently no, mostly just photo work in photoshop or lightroom and encoding video.

I may virtualize a few things since ill have a 8 core ryzen at my disposal but this will be a on the side/for fun/learning new OS's thing not a main use of the PC.

I think ill go with the evo. Thanks VL!

The other half is, the Pro has a longer warranty, if you care about that, and want to pay extra for it. Some people might, I personally don't need it though.

Yeah i noticed that too, but like you i dont really care, especially with something like a SSD its either going to work or it isnt, there arnt any moving parts to fail later.

That doesn't mean they won't (or can't) fail over time, nor that wear and tear may play a part.

The smart approach, though, is to approach it as though you _expect_ a failure, and plan accordingly. Doesn't matter if it's a 12 year old HDD or the most expensive SSD available. Treat them the same.

Obviously, i have a pretty failsafe backup system in place. I backup all my data three times, all to to 3.5" HDD's, one in the system itself with a backup of all other system drives on it, one in a fireproof safe onsite, and one at my brothers place. They get updated monthly. So worst case i loose last 30 days.

My DSLR photos are also backed up on the cloud as well as above system, and they get backed up each shoot to the cloud, so i wont loose any of them not even 30 days worth.

Ive yet to have a HDD failure have a negative impact on my data since i adopted my backup system. I did learn though that 3.5" drives are not reliable at all, hence the triplicate backups. I Have had multiple 3.5" HDD failures in drives that have had less than 10 hours power on time since new, only used monthly for 20 min each time for backups.

surely the PRO will be better... but it depend on what you use for... for only daily task...I think the EVO will be enough

The deal-breaker for me was my ambitious intent. If I'd wanted to build a simpler system with a single OS, I would certainly have picked the EVO over the Pro.

But I also wanted to add another frequently-accessed partition to the 1TB drive, for caching SATA SSDs and HDDs. So now we're looking at System-Reserved + EFI + Win7boot + Win10boot + cache-volume = five partitions or volumes.

It was just a guess for me that I could expect more TBW over a shorter amount of time. And at the price-point of a 1TB 960 EVO, it made better sense to buy more expected TBW, which for the Pro is about 800 TBW.

The biggest hit on TBW occurs when you either choose or are forced to delete a partition that you will restore from an image. If you seldom have to do that, the TBW grows more slowly. Yet, in this situation I myself have chosen and defined, I can expect those maintenance operations, restorations and rearrangements to occur more often.

Yet with the TBW expectations of EVO, I can see now that I'd have a long way to go before consuming the device.

Can't say I'm wrong, can't say I'm right, but I feel no regret at this point.
