You do realize that Samsung has officially confirmed that the Galaxy S2 will be updated to ICS right?
Me too.I expect the T-Mobile SGS2... to get ICS ROMs sometime mid next year
They also said the Behold 2 was gonna get froyo. Just saying.
PM is right. I expect ICS on the Int. SGS2 within one or two months officially. I expect the US carrier versions to get it officially sometime like mid next year, except for AT&T who will probably get it next December.
As far as ROMs go, already there are Int. ICS ROMs. I expect the AT&T SGS2 and the Sprint SGS2 to get stable-ish ICS ROMs about a month or two after the Int. stable release as both need the source code. I expect the T-Mobile SGS2 and the AT&T LTE SGS2 to get ICS ROMs sometime mid next year when either leaks come or people hack them together from bits of other phones (as that Qualcomm combo is used elsewhere).
mid next year?!!
just to clarify you mean 2012 and not 2013 right... Because if so.... D:
I think there may be a lul in devs waiting for certain things to be released and cracked so they can start working on ICS ports.
Go figure. These US-specific phones fragment the development community as much as the Phandroids like to say "fragmentation is a myth." I personally like the i777 due to the 4 buttons, but I know that if I were to pick i9100 vs i777, I'd pick i9100 because the fact that ROM development will continue for a long time means a lot more to me.The i777 development community has really seemed to die off in the past month or so. The only guy doing any real kernel development is Entropy, and no one is maintaining their ROMs anymore. I'm pretty disappointed, wishing I had bought the i9100 instead.
Sorry for hijacking but I think it's more appropriate to ask here rather than start a thread: I'm on T-Mobile (wifi access 75% of time) and considering buying a Exynos device, either Note or SGS2. How much should I pay for a used one and where to look besides CL?
TIA
Samsung was the first OEM to get it's hands on ICS. Reading between the lines of what Andy Rubin said about the Nexus process, OEM's aren't allowed to utilize the code on other devices before their contract for the Nexus expires yet the Nexus contractor, Samsung did get have earliest access, they'll be the first to upgrade their pure products and barring a major slowdown by the carriers, even their carrier specific devices should beat all others to official ICS updates as well. Without discussing actual necessity of the update and the size of demand for them, I doubt the updates will be synchronized across all carriers, some will get it sooner than others so DLeRium's point is somewhat valid.
Being a carrier specific HD2 owner, I wouldn't be too concerned about the decrease in ROM development. I've seen these silence before the storm situations few times, each occurred with major Android updates.
I think a minority of SGS2 owners is simply impatient. There are other, much needier and less valuable devices out there. Also, comparing G Nexus SoC vs. the Exynos and considering ICS's arguably better efficiency, I have a hunch the wait for official Exynos version will be worthwhile. On the other hand, the Skyrocket, the AT&T Note and the T-Mobile SGS2 possibly face 2 handicaps. Samsung will optimize ICS for their current bestsellers, the Exynos devices. Second handicap could be that the better implementation of GPU acceleration in ICS benefits the Exynos more than the arguably weaker Adreno. The gap should widen more between the 2 Note versions due to higher res. Even if a HTC device receives ICS first, as unlikely as that may be, Samsung wouldn't be far behind.

That is a possible scenario. And if it occurs like you say, if the i777 owners have to wait for ICS 6 months longer than intl owners, we have to point the finger at the carriers. Still, the arguably best Gingerbread device is better off than others. But forget whether SGS2 owners are impatient or not, let's look at how long it took for Froyo and Gingerbread to get delivered across to SGS1 users in the US.... The i9000 got updates rather quickly, though Froyo took a little longer, but none of this was an issue if you looked at how long it took the Captivate, Vibrant, Fascinate, etc. to get updates.
So yes while the official i9100 SGS2 ICS update isn't out yet, and everyone should calm down, I wouldn't be surprised if the ICS update dropped tomorrow and the US SGS2 owners have to wait another 6 months before they announce a release only to get pulled by AT&T the next day because idiots whine about bricked phones...
