Also, all the hyperbole over this phone was just that. HTC's M9 and Apple's iPhone held their own.

Did you read the link? The Basemark of the S6 beats every other phone, and the SAMOELD it has is now better than any LCD without question. Maybe the iPhone is close, but the M9 screen is trash.

The only thing that dissapoints me is the GPU, but they had to cut somewhere for the smaller battery to pan out.

No, it's gimmicky -- it doesn't add much beyond making swiping a little easier than it was on the GS5. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing, 'cause it does look cool, but don't get swept up in the "every phone will have curved displays" mania.

Unlike you I'm looking at all the benchmarks, not just one. One final benchmark that needs to be tested is battery. It'll be interesting how they all measure up.

while i agree that the newest generation of amoled panels (note 4 forward) are amazing, i gotta say that i prefer the iphone panel. as somebody who often works outside in a sunny state, brightness is hugely important to me and LCDs are just way way better in that regard.

the other aspects are a wash. at this point we have definitely reached the 'good enough' point for smartphone screens with the note 4 and iphone 6

oh and the gpu is just the stock ARM gpu that they ship with the A72 cores, it is always going to have a hard time competing with a dedicated, custom engineered chip like A8/X. for it to even come close to A8X in gpu is incredibly impressive

Well aesthetics is everything these days. A lot of stuff on the iPhone 6 and Apple iWatch are gimmicky too.

And I really do think every premium smartphone will have a curved display.

One reason why I think Samsung made the S6 Edge is because Chinese companies don't have the technology to mass manufacture curved displays. I'm not just talking about Xiaomi or Huawei, I'm talking about those infamous Chinese companies that crank out fake copies of iPhones and Galaxy phones.

Doesn't make any sense. The curve adds nothing to the experience of the phone but costs $100 more on/off contract.

To me, and the majority of people, aesthetics is on top of the list.

And strong demand for the S6 Edge shows that this is correct.

Why do some many people buy curved Samsung & LG TVs these days? It's not because of perceived benefits or anything like that, it's because it looks modern and aesthetically nice. It's like sex appeal. Men don't need date an attractive woman, but they choose to over dating an unattractive woman.

That's an interesting comparison. Goes to show how good Apple products really are.

That is an interesting observation. I was thinking "what if Samsung used LCDs and improved LCD tech instead of AMOLED?". The speed with which AMOLED advances in comparison to stale LCD techs is nothing short of amazing.

Anyhow, I have read several reviews and color accuracy of the S6/Edge's screens is top notch.

Add to that usual AMOLED strengths (infinite contrast, lower reflectance, better viewing angle) and S6/Edge specific strengths (insane 577 PPI, ability to choose sRGB/AdobeRGB, unique form factor in the Edge), there isn't really a competition.

Not a definitive verdict on battery performance yet but that is quite natural, because every use case is different from another. It will take some time as well as first-hand reports from forum members to find a trend. Initial reports are rather encouraging, however. I also get an impression that the Edge version seems to do better, albeit marginally but more than the difference of battery capacity suggests (50 mah). Could it be that the Edge version has better-binned Exynos 7420?

Edit: I really wish we had a separate forum for investors so that they can duke it out there who sells more or who has larger shares, etc. and let us discuss techs here.

No it isn't and most people are not stupid. I cannot imagine ANYONE spending 50% more (on contract) because of "aesthetics". That get old very fast because, now, you have to live with the thing. IMHO, this is all Samsung hype and I don't believe a word of it. I have no idea how people could've ignored the Galaxy Note Edge but discovered the S6E. It makes zero sense.

And how do you know the take rate on curved screens? I'm guessing you don't unless, as I suspect, you work for Samsung. I just bought my wife a 34" QHD curved Dell monitor. No, I did not buy it because of aesthetics. I got it because, for such a large screen, she did not have to move her head as much compared to a regular 34" monitor. Also, it's only her working on it so having many eyes was not a factor. Finally, it replaced 2 monitors.

Ehh people were paying $100 more for years for 16GB additional storage. It's just me, but I think the Edge is far cooler than a bit more storage for the money. The Note 4 or 6 Plus price also hasn't hurt those sales either.

I don't (nor does Samsung) think that the Edge will outsell the standard phone. But I also think lots of folks are underestimating the appeal of something actually new in smartphones will be Unlike previous curved efforts, there is 0 functional downside, it looks pretty amazing, and has some cool, though limited, uses. The Note 4 Edge isn't a great comparison besides the single edge as the entire package is hugely different from the S6 Edge which is far smaller, far thinner, and more elegant. Besides the fact the S series outsells the Note series by a huge margin. The press didn't go gonzo for the Note 4 Edge - by and large they have for the S6 Edge.

I won't be buying either version as I'm a phablet guy, but if I was, I'd totally get the edge. $5 more a month on Next/Leap type program is trivial and not different from choosing the 64GB iPhone 6 I bought for the wife. The $100 is not a barrier if people want it, The question is will they? Based on the number of younger kids at my work who are a year or two out of school who want one, I'd put my money on it being a surprise hit for Samsung.

You're underestimating the demand for aesthetics. Trust me, everything is about aesthetics and brand image these days.

Once a company has a hold of a certain image that everyone likes, everyone will buy that company's products over another company. However, that's assuming that particular company has significant brand power already.

Also I'm not sure what it is with you and the ad hominem remarks.

I don't work for Samsung or any other company, for that matter.

You would get the Galaxy S6 Edge, huh? Do you have a Galaxy Note Edge? No, you have the Note 4. Also, comparing a curved screen to an extra 16GB of data space is ridiculous. One provides countless opportunities. The other? Samsung hasn't told us the benefit yet.

Uh huh. The Galaxy Note Edge was a flop. We'll see if the GS6E is as well...

Hey your mind clearly is set (as always) so discussing this with you is mostly pointless.

The Note 4 Edge and S6 Edge are hugely difference devices as I tried to add in my edit, besides the obvious difference of being on both sides. The fact I'm left handed doesn't help, nor the fact that you can't one hand the Note 4 due to the size. The lesser battery life was another negative.

None of these apply to the S6 Edge and battery life is actually better than the standard S6 oddly enough.

I think the press/reviewers reactions are a promising sign. In general, the Note 4 Edge wasn't well received and no one recommended it over the standard Note 4. In a lot of previews/reviews of the S6, folks have said they'd get the Edge...just because they want one.

None of the kids at my work even knew about the Note 4 Edge, they do know about the S6 Edge.

Let's see how it goes. Like I said, I'm not in the market to buy a 5" phone, but I'm pretty sure I'd get the Edge and pay the extra $5/mo on the Next program and stick with the 32GB version. In a year or mostly boring evolution, it may be the only interesting phone.

M9 is sad. The Z4 will be a spec advance that'll be mostly indistinguishable from the Z3. The iPhone 6S will keep the same body as normal with better internals. It's going to be a snoozefest.

Everything you've said is pretty much spot on.

The Galaxy S6/S6 Edge are the only smartphones that are a step forward as far as upgrades go.

The Z4/iPhone 6s will merely be spec upgrades. And they might not even use UFS flash memory and LPDDR4 RAM.

Uh huh. Facts are facts. At the end of the day you did not buy the Note Edge even though the choice was there. As for reviewers, they're enthusiasts so it's not surprising that they will choose the model with all the bells and whistles. As for which model they would BUY? Well, that's a different story. Doesn't matter what industry it is, the story is always the same, reviewers tell people to buy one product (the one that pays the bills) while buying something else. As for the Z4 being "boring", the jury's still out on that as well. In fact, there is no jury because the thing only exists in our imagination. Now, how boring can your imagination be???

Thanks for supporting my belief that it's pointless to have a discussion with you since your mind is already made up in advance.

If you can't acknowledge that the devices and implementation are very different, then we don't have anything to discuss. By that viewpoint, if any V1 product doesn't work, then clearly it'll never succeed in the market.

1. Everything from size to looks to use cases are different. Besides both using the curved screen idea, they're significantly different. It's obviously subjective but the Note 4 Edge always looked awkward to me. The S6 Edge is one sexy kit, especially in blue and green.

2. As always you totally ignore any point you want. No one recommended the Note 4 Edge. Lots of people are for the S6 Edge. Carriers want more of the S6 Edge. Until we get sales data no one will know, but are you capable of at least accepting the initial reaction to the phones are completely different?

+1

The Galaxy Note Edge and the Galaxy S6 Edge are worlds apart when it comes to popularity.

I completely believe there is a decent chance the S6 Edge won't be as popular as many expect - whether it be due to a lack of desirability or cost. It may even end up being a bust.

My issue is with anyone who's quick to proclaim judgement either way and try to pass it off as fact.

The S6 Edge is a new unique device that's gotten much better press, carrier support, and buzz than the Note 4 Edge. Dari rightly points out that this is no surety of success.

Let's see how initial sales go - honestly it's only a couple weeks away.

Yeah, there's no question that the GS6 edge looks cool... the question is, will people pay $100 more on contract (even more off-contract) just to get the same phone with a curved display? I'm not sure they will. If curved displays take off, it may not happen until the economies of scale reduce or eliminate the price gap.

I wouldn't, but not because of the premium, I won't because of the lack of a freaking SD slot.
