I bought a Samsung laser printer over the weekend, and finally got it hooked up to my network today.

It works great, but I do have one concern. When the printer is first turned on, or first starts a print job it seems to dim the lights in my office a little. Is this a concern, or should I try to relocate the printer? Right now its hooked into a surge protector with a router, and my other printer (HP all in one inkjet). I don't have a UPS yet, but I'm planning to get one. It is a new house, so I don't think its the wiring. Not sure what rooms are run to which breaker though.

I tryed the printer on a different outlet, and it does the same. The lights lightly "blink" when it first turns on or goes to print.

I never was able to connect my HP 2840 laser to a UPS due to that initial power gulp. <fwiw>

Hey Ron, it's Nate; I have a Brother B4350 and sometimes these lights dim, but it isn't consistent. Lasers do have to heat up a lot to get the fuser ready, so what your telling me is certainly normal for a more modern speedier printer. Mine is an old 12 ppm model and likely uses a longer startup draw for the speed.

I've had the same experience with all of my laser printers. If you look at the fuse/power requirements on the back they are actually huge... but like others have said this is for the initial heating up of components, it doesn't suck that kind of power constantly while in use.

Thanks for everyones replies. I guess this is normal. I was just concerned since I've never seen this happen before. The computers haven't rebooted, and no breakers have tripped yet.
