Sapphire 9500 in counterstrike

I have a new 9500 that won't run anything but 640x480? Any higher res just uses part of the screen. Little help.

You have the latest drivers correctly installed? Are you running in OpenGL? Did you try D3D? Do you have FSAA on? Is your monitor recognized by Windows (correct .inf installed)? Does this happen in other games?

yeah it's your monitor drivers..
this is a very stupid thing ati implemented in their drivers...

it detects your monitor drivers.. and if it can't, it'll just lock the resolution on 640x480 @ 60Hz... and you can't change it unless you install the control panel.
in the control panel.. goto the displays tab.
click on your monitor, and set the max resolution and refresh to the highest one you can choose..

The problem is only in counterstrike, which is the only game I play. I can change the res on the desktop just fine. I tried the drivers from the sapphire cd and the drivers from ati catalyst 3.4

Again, are you running in OpenGL or D3D? Does Windows correctly identify your monitor, or does it say something like "standard monitor?"

Windows (xp pro) says plug and play standard monitor types. My monitor is a compaq 19" mv920. And I'm using opengl in counterstrike.

Download and install the correct monitor inf from Compaq's site, see if that clears it up.

I tried d3d and that crashed counterstrike. I'll try the inf from compaq.

Installed the inf from compaq and that worked! Thanks for the help. The hardware manager still says the monitor is plug and play, which I thought was an interesting side note. Almost didn't try it.
