Thanks Rockinacoustic as I kinda thought so. Actually I've been waiting for a while now hoping the 4850 would have a nice price drop.

With OC'ing, the 4830 can easily hit the performance of the 4850.

Exactly. This card comes with a VERY good cooler too, allowing it to easily eclipse most 4850's with clock speed. The only disadvantage of the 4830 is IIRC about 20% less SPU, you can oftentimes overcome this with a higher clock speed. From some benchmarks, this card overclocked can almost get to 4870 performance. This is a steal.

Nice card. I don't know how you can beat it for the price. I have one as spare that I stick in systems when I am testing them.

Sure, it clocks to 4850 performance, or nearly so,.. BUT, my 4850's clocked to, nearly, 4870 speed etc..

The great thing about the Sapphire 4830's is the core voltage can easily be raised with a tweak using Radeon BIOS editor. That allowed me to OC the core to 760 (nearly 200mhz higher than the stock).

And there are claims that the card exhibits instability at stock. It's well reported that the 4870 doesn't overclock like a banshee, but whatever. As I mentioned, it's rare to get 850mhz core speed from the 4870.

Back to the topic at hand, good card... I have a powercolor 4830 in my rig an like it.

What are everyone else's temps like? I'm thinking about re-seating the cooler.

Here are my temps:

GPU: 700 Mhz
MEM: 1065 Mhz

Played Crysis for 15 minutes, and the GPU temperature was 53C. The fan speed never really ramped up much, and my computer case is closed. I used ATI Tray Tools to verify that my 3D clocks were running at the correct speed. Your temperatures are a lot higher than mine.

Edit: I have had one lockup in Crysis after about an hour of play with the GPU at 700 Mhz, but it's been rock stable at 690 Mhz. Every other game seems OK with the GPU at 700 Mhz. I might need a tad more voltage to be completely stable at 700 Mhz - haven't messed with the voltages yet.

What would everyone here pick: this 4830 at $75 after MIR, or the upcoming 4830 replacement (which is supposed to come in at $90-100 and use less power than the 4830 while using less power)?

I really like this card, but I'd prefer the new card since it is supposed to exhaust the hot air out the back of the case, and because it will use less power.

I'm in no rush to buy....

If your not in a hurry, I'd wait for the new card. It will be interesting to see how it overclocks (which is a strong point of the HD4830) and maybe it will push the HD4830 to $75 without a rebate. It won't be an "exciting" card, but I'm looking forward to it coming out and seeing how it shakes things up.

Well since the new 4750/4770 (RV740) is planning on including the 6pin additional power source it should clock faster than the 4830. If it was lacking this part it may not clock faster due to not getting enough volts to move it out of the stock frequency in a stable fashion.
