Sata and Ide drive compatibility problem

Have an intel D975XBX2 motherboard and installed windows on a new 500gig SATAII drive. After install was complete......i went to hook up an IDE 160gig secondary drive to get some data off of it......and the machine hangs and won't boot to windows. Hangs at a black screen with a flashing cursor.

Using XP 64bit.

Any help is appreciated.

You need to go into the bios setup and set which drive is the primary drive. I think on my board, by default, it was looking at the IDE controller first, until I changed that. I'm not familiar with your specific board but I assume it has a setting in there for this.

i tried that and it still hangs. What should my ide be set at, master or slave? Thx for the response.

Is the IDE drive functional? A failed secondary drive can greatly delay the Windows startup as it tries to figure out what to do about that non-responding drive.

Nowadays, you'd normally set up the IDE drive for "Cable Select" (CS) and let the IDE cable decide whether it's Master or Slave. Be sure you are using an 80-conductor IDE cable and it's connected correctly.
