sata drives

I'm looking at getting my first sata drive.
I've notice myself IMO, that in 7200rpm eide drives that
maxtor
samsung
wd
seagate
in that order there seems to be a slight speed difference.
I like the dependability record of Seagate though, and the 5yr warranty.
What I'm wondering is, is there as much of a noticeable difference in
seek/transfer in the sata as there seems to be in the eide, or is it less noticeable,
or is Seagate maybe even faster with those than the others?

I'm sure there are some reviews out there on the net you can find if you do some searches. I have a Western Digital 80GB 7200 SATA, and it is pretty fast. I am happy with it. I do believe the Seagates are a little faster, but I am happy with the WD for the money.

I can't speak on seek/transfer rates.

Finally switched to Seagate about 8 months ago. Have a pair of 160 gig Seagates (ST3160023AS). Have you ever noticed that in these forums you will see folks state that Seagates are supposed to be quiet or they have a reputation for being quiet, yet you don't see folks state that they are in fact quiet? I love mine but I can tell you that if you get one, be prepared to hear that seek/transfer.

Doesn't bother me. But then again my Zalman at full speed doesn't bother me either.

I'd recommend Seagate to anyone.

I have a seagate 200GB Barracuda, and while it's IDE and not SATA, I'll say it runs plenty quiet for me. Sure I hear it a bit, but compared to all the other HDD's i've had, it's very soft.

Dependability of seagates are the best I have seen period. They are in my opinion the most reliable drives (both sata and ide) next to WD that I have ever ran. As far as the seek/transfer rates, from my experience the rates can vary, but I haven't noticed any major difference in the different sata drives I run concurrently.
