It's high time I decided to dig into the DVDRW market since my DVD ROM rests in peace, I ve never been a movie enthusiast + backups were always taken on an extra HDD.
Question is, my DVDRW apart from being dual layer and capable of using DVD RAM discs, should it better be lightscribe enabled or SATA interfaced, which won't of course show any performance gain compared to IDE but has no master slave fuss and connects to much nicer, hassle free cables in the case?
The matter arised when I realised that there are no SATA + lightscribe drives available around at a reasonable price - correct me if I am wrong....

If those are the only benefits why not just go for the IDE/Lightscribe? Once you screw that drive in and neatly arrange those cables I doubt you'll ever touch it again (unless of course you're one of the guys around here that "rebuilds" their pc every week)...

In fact, I know of one SATA/Lightscribe burner . .

SATA

I guess that makes two. Probably more on the way.

HP doesn't make any burners (they rebadge) so it actually is one of the others that you can find out there.

Theres faster IDE burners that do Lightscribe as well. SATA is just an IDE drive with a convertor on it.

May I add that buying a SATA optical drive is a plus in a long term prospect, since IDE controllers will be sooner or later totally phased out from mobos like serial, parallel and PS/2 ports?
After all, I think that using lightscribe is a really heavy load for the drive's laser and I am too tired to swap drives every 2 years...(so, no, it's not fun for me to rebuild my pc every week). Not to mention how useless I find the invention while Googling on it these days....

If you are too tired to swap out a CD drive once every two years...you need a vitamin man.

Use whichever you want.

Ligtscribe is cool but takes forever. I like the nice labels it makes but honestly I quit using it after a few discs. It just takes too long. Now that my lightscribe disc is not being used in my main computer maybe I will start using it again because the labels are cool and I am not affected by 50 minute burns.

SATA eliminates the whole master/slave thing so unless you into kink get SATA! The Samsung drive is a great deal almost anywhere. I got mine at ewiz.com.

Yep, that's it! SATA will be my choice and the Samsung S183A is a great drive indeed - DL, DVDRAM support @ 12x speed read/write, SATA. There is a lightscribe edition as well, S183L but let it be...Maybe when lightscribe draws in full colour in 10 minutes' time! (maybe never that is...!)
Thanks to everyone for all the input
