Hi There!

I've heard reports ofpeople using them fine with SATA2 drives, you'll loose NCQ and other features though.

The item linked by OP is for adapting an IDE device (HDD, optical drive etc) to connect to a SATA port on the motherboard.

If you want to run a SATA device on a mobo without SATA ports, your best bet is an SATA expansion card (usually PCI) that carries a number of SATA ports (and might include RAID options as well).

I'd agree. The convertor will work as well. If you're loading a card on the bus make sure you don't have any other bandwidth hungry devices on the bus as well as these will erode the performance of the card/drive combination.

I haven't seen a SATA drive to PATA controller converter that I can recall - plenty of PATA drive to SATA controller. PCI SATA controllers are known to be problematic on older mobos, so having my druthers I'd suggest skipping SATA drives until you have a mobo with native SATA support. Carrying PATA drives over to a SATA machine is much easier.

Well, I guess there are SATA to IDE adapters now (see post just above this one). So you can go that way if you want. I read all the buyer reviews and only a couple had a problem with it. Just be sure to set your drive to SATA 1 operation to work best with it. Some SATA drives have a jumper, others have software settings, but those that have software settings come set to SATA I as default. IDE can only work at 133 and no current IDE drive (whether SATA or PATA) can come close to 133 MB/sec on sequential reads/writes anyway.

Why?! Just buying an IDE drive would be easier, cheaper and it would perform better.

Also, i agree with betasub

Um... How is it cheaper? what if the OP already has a SATA drive.. has a motherboard that only has IDE ports on it.. Why not just use the $18 adapter?

Why not just buy a PCI SATA controller card? They can't cost much. The drive makers used to give them away for free with some hard drives.

Another option as well.... which might be the better option.

I'll add this... I have one of the IDE -> SATA adapters. I wanted to run my ide dvd burner on a SATA port, to get rid of the huge ide ribbon cable..
The burner worked great, no problems at all... Until.. I wanted to boot off of a cd/dvd..
The dvd burner was now not bootable, on the adapter..

That is something to keep in mind of, if you were to use that adapter, and intended to have that hard drive bootable.. It just might not work

Yes you can convert a SATA II drive or SATA I drive, SATA II is backward compatible with SATA I. Worst case scenario you won't be able to take advantage of features that SATA II has but then agian it's the same thing with SATA I features.
