no performace gain hardly but is faster 150

you can live without it for many years to come
but the WD Raptor 10,000 RPM SATA hard drive is sweet, trust me

Is it possible to use only one WD Raptor as the only hdd in a system? am considering buying a raptor one at a time (it's hell pricey) and when time comes will upgrade my system (MB and CPU) to upcoming hardware (A64 939) or intel 915.

Sure, it'll work as long as your BIOS boots to SCSI (the way most current MOBO's see SATA). Don't wait too long to buy a second drive for SATA though. Firmware will change over time and you want the drives to be as identical as possible for RAID.

Im in the same boat as you I have a 40 gig couple year old maxtor 7200 rpm. The next thing I plan on upgrading will be my hard drive it will definaitly be a SATA drive and probably a raptor at that. I'm wait on 1 of 2 things. For the new verision of raptors to come out of the current version to drop in price a little bit. I have waited this long so I can wait awhile longer hehe =) and if I get sick ofwaiting I may go with those new Hitachi drives that I have been hearing so much about.

Are 7200RPM SATA hdds noticeably faster than 7200 RPM PATA hdds, or do you only see the increase in speed with the higher RPM in, for example, the Raptor?

Yes, but only for certain things. With Raptor's the quickness is obvious.
