Saw a weird accident today ...

OK, I'm sitting at a stop light ...

The cars coming in my direction are pretty
backed up at their light.

I notice a car trying to pass those backed up,
by dring across the solid double line, partially in the wrong lane,
in order to get to the turn lane, which has no one in it.

Then, I notice a car pulliing out of 7-11, which is alongside
the cars backed up at the light, between a couple cars that left sapce for
him.

Right then, I think to my self, "damn, they're gonna hit each other"

Sure enough, the next thing I hear is a loud SMACK ...
They ran right into each other, neither one seing the other.
No one even hit their brakes. Both cars' front ends were demolished.
Hoods bent up, radiatiors pushed back, enginges smoking.

Luckily, all passengers in both cars seemed OK, as they all got out right
away.

Just then, I got my green, and drove pass them.

From what I saw, I have no idea who was at fault, since it seemed
like they both messed up...

1st car for driving across the yellow,
2nd car for pulling into traffic (even though it was illegal traffic)

Since the first car shouldn't have been there, is the second car free of fault?
Or is it possible for both cars to be ticketed as "at fault" ?

Who do you think was at fault ?

Here's a diagram of the scene

If taking a left out of the 7/11 is legal at the spot, then it's the guy who was over the solid yellow who is at fault

I really, really don't see how that could be a legal left turn, particularly in an intersection with two-lane roads and a stoplight.

imo, the grey car is at fault, since they were making their own lane (effectively driving into oncoming traffic in the opposite direction). the cars that were there legally made way for the car pulling out of 7/11, so he had no reason to think there might be a third car coming from the left.

Nice picture.

They're both idiots and got what was coming, so who cares. Not like you will find out anyway.

According to my understanding, it's 7-11 dude's. You're supposed to be aware of ALL traffic, legal and illegal before entering/crossing any lane. Other guy will probably get cited for that.

Nice diagram

The car leaving 7-11 is at fault.

Failure to yield right of way to oncoming traffic while turning left. The positioning of the gray car is irrelavant, you always have to yield to oncoming traffic, regardless of where they are.

If either the red pickup or the blue sedan waved the dude in the 7-11 through then it's their fault for illegally directing traffic.

I don't think they waived him..

They just didn't block the exit from he parking lot
(which is common courtesy)

I'm betting they'll both get tickets from the cops but I'd go with the driver who crossed the double/solid center line as getting the at fault. At the same time, there's no reason for the person comming from a 7-11 to be going through stopped traffic, that's not allowed and it's way too easy to get stuck or trapped and make the situation worse when the light clears.

They'd probably declare it no-fault to either driver. Driver A's insurance would cover Driver A. Driver B's insurance would cover Driver B.
