I saw it today. I must also agree that it was a great film. The setting and style is comparable to City of God. The ending, however, caught me off guard. The tune was definitely catchy. But I'm still wondering what Jai Ho means. :/

There's nothing Bollywood about the movie. It wasn't made by the Hindi movie industry in Bombay, and it's not a musical. Bollywood makes movies about fair-skinned rich people who live in fake Western style houses, wear jeans, and dance spontaneously to music, while completely ignoring the bleak, depressing widespread poverty of India in its own backyard.

I haven't been back to India in a couple of years. Every Bollywood movie that I've seen is fake. Everything on the Indian satellite TV is fake. This movie is the most realistic depiction of India I've ever seen. For the first time in years, I felt like I was back. Great film, though quite disturbing at times, especially the maiming of beggar children, because it was - sadly - so real.

Not all Bollywood movies have all the songs in them, but I'm assuming you knew that. Also, there was a dance at the end of Slumdog.

I honestly thought it followed the very familiar Bollywood movie format without the music. You have the antagonist(s), the mafia type character, the hero and heroine, everything that gets in between the hero and heroine only to have them finally join at the end.

Granted, a lot of movies fit that same format, but many Bollywood movies just don't tell the story very well and they resort to silly special effects. The new trend seems to be guys running around with open shirts and a perpetual wind in front of them even if they're inside.

Anyway, loved the movie.

I don't see how this can be called a Bollywood film when there's no Bollywood actors. (Technically Freida Pinto doesn't count as Bollywood because Slumdog Millionaire was made by a non-India, outside of India, like how Bend It Like Beckham wasn't really Bollywod because it didn't contain any real desi actors)

Are you sure they said Jai Ho and not Jai Hind?

I enjoyed it. Some inconsistencies and contrivances, but the visuals and the overall progression make up for those.

What's this? An ATOT thread about a movie that doesn't include dozens of replies saying "it's overhyped"? That's impressive.

wow. moron. lords of the rings was a terrible movie because hobbits are obviously fake!

judging a movie just by its story is like judging a song just by its singing (bob dylan).

saw gran torino and this back to back and it blows gt away

:disgust:

Good thing I had free tickets.

Bollywood?

That's as accurate as saying this was classic Italian Neorealist.

I don't think it's a stretch to assume that you have no idea how to qualify either of those genres.

Just came back from the theatre from this.

Oh my god. Best movie I've seen all year. Better than Gran Torino, The Wrestler and Benjamin Button. Going in, I thought it was a stupid movie about the 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire" TV show, and some conspiracy. Before last week (Golden Globes), I didn't even know it was set in India. It had everything, and I actually felt good leaving the theatre for once.

Surprisingly or unsurprisingly, the theatre was packed tonight. Lots of 'older' people there. I'm guessing they went for the same reason I did (Golden Globes); that and I didn't feel like watching 'Defiance'.

Music was excellent and atmospheric too. I'm am wowed.
