RIP, and peace to his family. I'm not Obama's biggest fan (although I don't consider him "worst President ever" or such) but do think he should be allowed a recess appointment to fill the seat for now. After the election allow the next President to pick to permanent replacement. That's the easiest way to keep this from turning into a cage match until the election. Theoretically I think he should be allowed to do the job himself but with the GOP holding the Senate you know that ain't happening.

Is it even possible to put someone on the Supreme Court temporarily?

This will make the future debates a bit more entertaining....

He must've been a saint to his loved ones in his private life because he was a shitty SCJ...

He can nominate someone, doesn't mean that person is going to get confirmed.

Maybe, but there will be a political price to pay for obstructionism. Obama can appoint a highly qualified woman from a battleground state.
If GOP wants to debate Citizens United, women's reproductive rights, etc, and alienate women all the way into the election, they will have an opportunity to do so.

Obama can and should nominate a permanent replacement. There is no valid argument for leaving the Supreme Court short a justice for over a year. Republicans will try really hard to come up with reasons why we should wait until next January, but we all know the real reason is that they don't want the makeup of the court to change.

It will be interesting to see all the excuses they trot out though.

Grasping at straws I see. McConnell knows how to pick his battles. Obama will very likely offer up a well qualified fairly non-controversial nominee. Senate Repubs will put up some obligatory hurf-burf & then quietly choke it down. This isn't a good place to get all stupid.

The reality is, the GOP is put is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

If they do not obstructs, they throw in the white flag, the SCotUS has a 5-1-3 Liberal Majority for the foreseeable future and their base goes apeshit and the lose by a mile in November because of it. The GOP would literally implode because the base will not accept the GOP raising the white flag. The GOP base is still delusional that they think they will get abortion and gay marriage outlawed by the Supreme Court(eventually).

If they do obstruct, they may lose the Presidency and Senate, but it's not a sure thing like the above scenario. If the GOP capitulates and lets Obama appoint someone for Scalia, the GOP will be no more.

So every debate from now will almost undoubtedly include:

1) A question about Roe v Wade

2) A question about the second amendment

Anything else?

Unfortunately I doubt the privacy or surveillance of American citizens will be touched upon again.

If the GOP does that, the GOP is over as their base will revolt.

Why is it outside the realm of possibility that Obama would take out a judge? He probably just wrote himself a secret executive action granting himself the right to do so.

OK, so you are either being sarcastic or just trolling.

If not, please seek some help. I mean it.

Best wishes go out to his family & Friends, Can't say I am personally disappointed as I think he was the worst SCJ that I can recall.

Yup... sad to see him pass but happy with his permanently exiting the court. This quote from him says it all when it came to his poor judgment:

“Mere factual innocence is no reason not to carry out a death sentence properly reached”
His interpretation of the law meant that it was all about the process. Hell, even innocence did not matter to him as long as he thought the law was properly followed.

As the old bigots and homophobes die off, the country and civilization will be ever the better.
If you want sympathy from me, this is the best I can do.

And so much for Pat Robertson's wish for Ginsberg's death from cancer.
Take THAT man of the godless.

It's their call. If they do obstruct, it's going to be an election on:
-Women's rights
-Citizens' United
-Voting Rights Act
etc etc
It could alienate young people and women from the GOP for a generation. Obama is going to nominate a sympathetic person, maybe an Asian woman.
GOP wants to be obstructing the first Asian nominee to SCOTUS? When they are trying to make inroads into this fast growing affluent community that could otherwise be aligned with the GOP on economic issues? It's going to be game over for them in the long run.
Also, now Ted Cruz and Rubio are going to try to outdo each other as to who is more obstructionist in the Senate. It won't bode well for them in the general election.
