While it is not too scary of a game at all. There was a few scenes on Wheel of Time that had me jump out of my seat.

Given when I play a game though, I like the volume up really high
If Diablo were not so stupid of a game, that one would have me vote.

I can remember playing Spear of Destiny (follow-up to the original Wolfenstein 3D from id software), getting to the last level, not knowing what to expect...the level was kind of catacomb-ish, with creepy music, and there were a bunch of relatively slow-moving "ghosts" following me around. When I finally got backed into a corner by one I unloaded a bunch of bullets into him and killed him. Two seconds later he started fading back into existance and I remember the hair standing up on the back of my neck! (You were constantly monitoring your ammo supply in those games)

Also, I can remember receiving a huge adrenilin jolt whenever I was unexpectedly "ripped" by a imp in Doom...that tearing sound was great.

7th guest, 11th hour (didn't get far in it at all), Gabriel Knight 2 (remember FMV games?), System Shock 2 (the organic/machine perversions were frightening), Quake I/II, Doom, X-com series (2 was scariest, but probably becuase it was most difficult), AVP2 (again, the marine episode, I hate being the prey).

Scariest game ... 7th Guest. Most-likely-to-jump-in-the=dark : Doom, ss2. Most tense: hour and half long missions in the Xcom series.

Strangely to me, Half Life was the scariest I've played. The AVP2 that I've played, RTCW, and Resident Evil, Doom to me don't compare to HL... I dunno, I've got strange phobias.

Wolfenstein! The first one! For those who got into computer games early, playing this game (one of the first fps games ever! If not the first) for the first time (after getting over the graphics and the motion sickness (for some) was extremely scary. Probably not the horror of Phantasmagoria or System Shock 1 or 2. But the Suspense of walking around a corner only to hear "gestapo!" Trully, a great gaming experience for those who started their gaming in that era. Thank you John Carmack!

Scariest Game Ever? I don't know ... I don't play them, I'm afraid ...

No really, not the scariest game ever, but the game which scared the sh!t out of me, was ... Wolfenstein 3D, with a sound board!

But let me explain: back then, I played alot of Wolfenstein 3D, but one day I added a sound card to my rig (back then, sound card was an option , and only a few had one). The sound of the enemies voices, the quick railgun at them ... that quick move, turn and get an enemy at your face was awesome! And played in a dark room ... WOW!!! I was afraid of playing it even before I lauched the game! But I kept going at it ... ... that gave my heart quite a stress ... glad I have no heart problems, or I wouldn't be posting this full-of-spelling-errors message

Shoot, I remember getting freaked out playing Wolfenstein back when the sound was coming through the PC speaker! Trying to peer around corners and a Nazi behind you starts lighting you up. Or those dogs! First game that ever scared me to play. You youngester probably haven't even heard of the original Wolfenstein.

EDIT: Didn't read the above posts before posting. After adding a sound card, Wolf 3D was even freakier.

I still have Wolf 3D, Duke 3D, Doom1/2, Quake on floppys, I wonder if I could even run them anymore. I'll have to fire up my old P120 and install DOS 6.22 to play them, haha

You can run Wolf 3D, Doom 1/2, Quake in Open GL with 32 bit color with source ports
