what's what all...???!
I have a school networking project due!!!! And I need some help!!!!! The project calls for a Campus to be networked together (5 Dorms)
And each dorm has 300 students in each house (1500 students total) and the 5 dorms need to be networked to the main office (Server)
So that's the problem !!!! If you could tell me how to do this, what OS to use, Hubs, cabling, or anything else , It would be great!!!!

It is easy!

I saw the other day in Barns & Nobel a Black & Yellow book.

It goes under the title ?Network for Dummies?; you will find the answer there.

Come on guys, give the kid a break! This is what you need:

1506 peices of string(kite string should work well here) in various lengths (depending on distance from dorm rooms, to each dorm, to server)
1501 Metal Soup cans

Give each student a metal (with the label off) soup can connected with a peice of string in each dorm room. Tie the lose ends together.

Attatch a single peice of string to each end then tie the 5 ends together. Attach 1 string to that run it to the remaining Metal can for your server room.

You now have a basic non switched network connecting 5 dorms to your main server.

A+ for this classs NO PROBLEM!!!!

I'd recomend for a network stable OS either Windows 95 or Windows ME. Make sure all networking cable is run on the floor especially in high traffic areas. For network cable get 10Base-2.

Oh gosh...that's all overkill for this project!

Windows 3.11, peer-sharing, and Arcnet... ALL THE WAY!

Scariest thing about this post is that it follows the same screwed-up logic (and yeah I know you are kidding, but I've seen too many "professionals" tout this same scheme) of this lamebrained article hosted on our own beloved AT.

***Thinkin about this inspired me to start another thread, replete with poll. Cast your vote!

You have houses in dorms? Huh?

Dude...networking isn't about cables and hubs and OSes. It's about love of the sport. You have to truly appreciate the beauty of making one inanimate object talk to another. It's freaky man! Yeah! It's a love thang. If you don't love it enough to figure it out...you're beyond any help we could give you.

hehe

that....and we need to know the primary purpose of the network. Client communications? File Sharing? Distributed computing? Just plain jane access to the internet? Silly user

Client server is dead! Long live p2p! Who thought up that funky client server BS anyhow?

(Is there a crayon font for statements like this? )

Geez, help the guy out. I recommend using whatever OS best suits the needs of the users, whatever cabling is most economically feasible for the campus, while still maintaining as much future growth potential as possible. As for hubs or switches, I recommend them, and possibly bridges, routers, or VLAN devices as necessary. Let me know if you need any more help.

The point many of the posters here were trying to make (atleast this is what I gathered out of this) is that there is a difference between helping someone do their homework and doing their homework for them.* If there was more information, with more specific questions and a possible layout that we could critique I am sure many of the people here (definitely including myself) would be more than happy to help out. But there is no way I will complete the project for him. Know what I mean?

*Ack! Im starting to sound like my dad

I logged on tonight to ask a question... but after reading this... I think I'll just do some more research.

Even though some questions are inappropriate, I feel that a nuge in the right direction might help (at times).

Anyway, heregoes: networkzone and ItToolbox

How about this idea - start the project and then ask questions.
(And maybe get your own ID so your freind doesn't look like an idiot.)
