There was a youtube video where a foxconn worker showed the iPhone 5 and said they had huge production problems and only something like 20% of the first batch were good. He also said phones made in october should be of much higher quality

From reading online, it looks like Verizon nicks you $35 to return the phone. Crummy. I don't mind the scuffs so much as the purple haze issue on the camera. I can deal with a scratch, but I can't deal with screwed-up photos

Hm I removed my case, and thankfully, mine appears to be fine. Although, I'm wondering how long it will take for me to scratch it when trying to put the headphones in!

Anybody with a tiny bit of brain would know to stay away from the black version, just like any kind of colored anodized AL. Scratches will be silver and very visible.

These kinds of early-adopter pains are common with every major iPhone refresh.

Yea but it's kinda funny how in this article they indicated workers took out their frustrations by slamming down the backs of the iphone 5...

http://micgadget.com/29723/the-unde...-new-iphone-5-is-made-inside-foxconn-factory/

On the next following day, we were all being treated the same way by our supervisors and all of us were very pissed. Every time we picked up the iPhone 5 components, we put it back on the running belt real hard and scold “fxxk” just to release our stress. One of the senior advised us to stop work on time at 5 a.m even if the supervisor ask you to over time, as this is not against the regulations.

I wonder if Apple would ever consider moving their building operations because of the Chinese workers damaging the phones? It's a pure logistics argument, but if the overhead of replacing these devices is too troublesome or costly compared to manufacturing the devices elsewhere, then why continue to deal with disgruntled Chinese employees? Even though Apple has been pushing for better working conditions, things have seemed to get even worse.

I think it more has to do with crappy design. All of my past iPhones have been perfect out of the box. The iPhone 5 was obviously rushed to meet a deadline - camera defects, light leaks in the case, scuffing issue, etc.

Anodized aluminum scratches quite visibly, it's kind of a fact of life. I'm not sure why Apple elected to do it to the back plate of an iPhone but they used to ship shiny metal backed iPod touches for ages and those scratched if you looked at them wrong.

Buy the white phone, then buy something from here: http://www.slickwraps.com

I put mine in a cover right away, I knew if I didn't take care the black would get scuffed. my plan is to grab a screen and back protector and then throw on a bumper case for the sides.

Not "normal" at all. I've got dollar store flashlights that I keep in a toolbox which anodized finishes that show no scratches even though they're rolling around with wire brushes.

Yeah but not this fast or this visibly, unless it's a super-cheap product. I have a cheap $10 set of anodized screwdrivers from Newegg that I've been using for over a year and barely have any wear on them.

I'm guessing they rushed the process.

weren't the ipod minis and nanos (excluding the original) done up with anodized aluminum? and that's what actually prevented them from getting scratched?

Well, I mean the devices being scuffed out of the box. That's definitely not normal, and it sounds like it was caused by the factory workers.

My device looks absolutely fine, but it's never been out of a case for more than a minute (usually when someone wants to see it caseless ).

Huh, I remember the first nanos were scratch prone...

Yes, very much so. I excluded them.
But after switching to the aluminum casings, everything seemed fine. wonder what the difference is in the process now for the iphone5 alumnium backing.

The first nanos were scratch prone on the glass on the front, that was what the class action lawsuit was about. The back was a shiny metal surface that, like the iPod touch until recently, scratched when you breathed on it because it was … shiny and super obvious when anything touched it.
