Seagate ES Series

Any reason to spend the extra 20 bucks on one of these vs a 7200.10 series? This will be my first Seagate drive for a personal computer. I worked in a shop that was exclusive Seagate, and thought they ran kind of hot, and loud compared to WD and Samsung drives. I'm just hearing really good stuff about the current gen of Seagate drives out right now performance wise. Anyone have any personal experiences with these drives that could offer some input. I like to ask around, and get as much information as possible.

I've got some of these running in a raid array. They've been running for ~6months almost 24/7 and for the most part they seem to be okay. I ran into some data corruption issues this past weekend but for the most part they are good.

On a side note I bought an identical 320 that wasn't the ES version at the same time and I RMAd that around mid 2nd month of ownership. I dont think theres much difference but at the time of purchase for me they were almost the same price, maybe $5 difference?

Damn, 2 months? Sounds like my personal experience with Quantom Fireball drives a couple years back. My Samsung drive is making the click of death on me. It's about 5-6 years old so it's about time to die. I was either going to go Seagate or WD this go around. I've seen benchmarks with the Seagate outperforming the WD drives. The price difference right now on newegg is $79.99 vs $94.99 between the ES and 7200.10.

RE: the Seagates:

I talked to a Seagate rep about these. He indicated they were the same except for temperature and vibration sensors on the ES drives.

Ahh, thanks for the info. 5 year warranty is looking good right now. I think I'm going to give Seagate a try this go around, and see how it goes.

You say yourself that they run hotter and louder than equivalent WD/Samsung drives, and yet you still want to choose Seagate. Why? I think Seagate tends to get overhyped around here because they have the newer technology and performance-wise they do well. But WD and others are making cooler running and quieter drives. I've come to realize lately that I'll give up a few performance points for a cool/quiet drive so my next drive will probably be a WD.

This was back in 2002-2003 while I was working in a computer repair shop going to college. From what I've heard, and read on online reviews this isn't the case now? Kind of why I asked on here if anyone has any experience with these drives now. Was curious if they still run hotter, and more noisey when compared to the likes of WD or Samsung.

the es is unnecessary for personal use. just buy whatever is cheapest (out of Seagate and WD- personally I would rather have speed then the acoustics of Samsung)

btw a few degrees doesn't really matter

didnt google find that drives generally like running warm or almost hot? much like car engines, once they warm up they break in a bit. pretty much everything mechanical works that way at least...

According to test results, the majority of the drives did not appear to be affected by their operating environment. In fact, researchers indicated that drive operating temperatures had little to no effect on failure rates -- a cool hard drive survived no longer than one running hot.
