Seagate vs Western Digital

A friend of mine is running 4 7200.9 80GB in RAID0 - I'll let y'all know when they fail!

It seems to be only with the higher capacity drives - I have a client who's running 2x80s in RAID1 w/o problems - calls me last week and tells me his 160GB PATA in an external enclosure is dead.

Going out there tonight to fix the issue, if I can...

I'm a Samsung fan - they don't make 400+ gig drives that I know of - but I've never had any samsung die on me and all of them have been quiet and reliable. A few years ago me and my brother build my grandparents a comp and put my 40gig samsung in it and I went to a WD 60GB. Apparently UPS played football or something with my grandparent's computer on the way to SC, because when they got it the case was twisted (even putting my weight on it won't make it budge!), the RAM was knocked out of its socket, the one case fan came undone, and a component was broken off the video card. (YES the computer was properly packed ) The vid card got replaced, but everything else still works. That samsung drive in there is a tough thing. Case is still bent but my grandparents don't care a whole lot, it isn't bent too bad, just enough that it won't sit straight on a flat table, you gotta put something under the one corner.

That 60GB WD that I got scared me since all but 1 previous WD drive had died on me - the worst was when I turned my computer off the one day, the next day the drive was practically dead on bootup. I was barely able to scrape my data off of it. That WD 60GB never gave me trouble though, so maybe they are better.

You live dangerously, I'm scared everyday about just 2 drives RAID0, but then again they are Maxtors, so maybe I'm living more dangerously than you.

For what it's worth I have one of the WD 320GB, non-RE models in my Xbox, it's PATA obviously but has worked well for the 4 months that I've had it.

Is maxtor really that bad...I've owned more WD that have pretty much all failed. I've lost 1 maxtor..with one clicking. The remaining 2 I'm using now are maxtors...i'm thinking of using samsungs now.

i have all 3 brands maxtor, seagate and wd. all are still going strong over 3 years.

I got 2 Quamtum 20Gb that are 6 year old, 2 60Gb WD that are 5 year old, and 2 120Gb WD one is 3 year old and the other is 1.5 year old none of them is dead to this day. I had a seagate dying on me in the most critical moment, so i'm reloctant to thrust them like i thrust a WD.

WD is better. I had several Seagate drives die on me and my friends. No WD ever died on any people I know personally. I have 5 WD drives in diff computers, from 1 to 8 years old.

I have one Samsung, too. 80GB. Only had it for a month, so I can't advise on that. But from what I heard, they are pretty good.

so if I'm building a raid 1 with 500gig HD's and I already got a Seagate (the $190 deal from outpost.com last week), I take it I should put a WD in the cluster with it?

I honestly only recommend using EXACTLY the same drives in any RAID array. (brand, model, size, speed, etc)

Technically, it shouldn't matter though. In your case, I'd probably pick up a second Seagate. (assuming it has the 5yr warranty)

I?ve had 3 WD drives and they?ve all been excellent (all were 80 GB Caviar SE?s). I?ve never tried Seagate so it?s not fair for me to say they?re good or bad. My first PC had a 20GB Fujitsu 5,400 drive in it that was still going strong after five years when I donated it to a friend!

WD has ahd a lot of failures too though. WD had drives not on fluid bearings while other ocmpanies were ages ahead. They didn't move to native SATA until who knows when. Hell, they still used 83gb platters when Seagate was on 133.

I think the one thing that is definitely consistent today is Hitachi. The 7K250? :thumbsup: Besides the meowing drives... heh.

And the T7K250 had the performance crown for today's SATA drives until the 7200.10 came out.

My 3 year old T7K250 just died a few days ago, heh.
Oh yeah, if you email Hitachi they will send you a new firmware that gets rid of the meowing feature.

Hard drives are such a crap shot.

My 3.5 year old segate 60gig is still going strong, has 97 relocated sector, but still worknig great, no clicking etc
2 year old WD 200 gig, is same, in the last month relocated sectors went up from 4 to 16 but still works fine.

My new comp has 3 wd drives 2 * 200 gig ones and a 74gig raptor, only had them for 2 - 3 months so i cant really coment on them

I only buy either seagate or WD, at the moment i prefer WD, for me is seems like their drives are quiter and quicker at the moment. I bough a 120 gig sata 2 drive for my brother and it seemed a bit on the slow side. Although i have no problems with my 80 gig in second comp.

never used maxtors, just always stayed away from them, it seems like it was a good idea also

So when is the newly merged Seagate-Maxtor going to make hard drives branded under the new name? Hopefully, they take just the best from each company's hard drives and combine them.

What new name? Seagate did not merge with maxtor, it bough maxtor, so seagate will stay seagate probably, we only have to wait and see if they continue to make maxtor branded hdds
