at the pharmacy that i work at you can pick up c-II prescriptions and we don't even check your ids. If you know someone dropped off a prescription, any prescription, just tell us the name and we'll hand it over, no questions asked.

Not really "secrets", but tips when buying a foreign car. (Domestic makers truly do have WAY more money for discounts/rebates/tricks)
- If you're a dick or rude, you will get a shittier deal. Be polite and the sales person will work harder on your behalf
- If you bitch and haggle over like $200-$400 on the deal, you will be black balled in service or simply told, fine, we don't want the sale because we know you're gonna be a little bitch down the road
- Even if you're sold a car at the dealer's invoice cost, they're still making 2-3% on hold back. Plus there's probably some spiff money coming from the auto maker too. It's called "trunk money"
- Be polite to the service counter guys. They know you're pissed and inconvenienced and are trying to help. Believe me, their job sucks being bitched at by customers all day. If you're polite to them, just like sales guys, they will do more to help you.
- CLEAN your trade in before you bring it to be appraised. This will make a difference
- After market crap, upgraded stereos, snow tyres etc make no difference in trade-in value.
- Mention you have a trade up front and you will probably get a slightly better trade. If you blind side them w/ a trade after a deal is worked out you will get the lowest possible number
- Best time to buy a car, end of the month, absolute best time, end of the year
- When quoted an interest rate, ask how many points they're making on you. Dealers are given a "buy rate" by the auto makers/banks, then they add points to it and that's what they quote you
- Financing a car will 99% of the time get you a better deal than paying cash

If a plumber comes by with a side kick. They will charge you for the extra person that is along for the ride. They will charge you way more for parts then what they are worth .

when going to the dr's office get an itemized bill. You will always be over billed.

when ordering a long island ice tea tell them to make it the old school way, new bottles have it premixed which is 4 x's diluted.

if you are diabetic and need a meter call one of the major manufactuers (accu check, bayer, one touch) and tell them yours broke. they will send a new one and wont ask for the old one back.

call clorox and tell them that their faulty lid caused your rug to stain. they will send out a 50$ at most without proof to you to compensate for their faulty product.

You were doing pretty good up until the fraud at the end.

This thread is awesome.

If you are shopping for insurance and the agent asks you "How many miles to work?" Tell them any number <12. Anything >12 will net a surcharge.

So anything between 1 & 12 will make no difference? I've always said 3miles when it's been closer to 6...maybe it's time to be honest.

A company I used to work for would almost always make a sell (get a bid) on a multi million dollar deal without have a clue one how to do the things they said they could, then they'd try and figure out how to do within the timelines they said they we be able to "easily" do it often times not getting it done on time or at all for that matter.

Yeah, lying and saying a product ruined your rug when it didn't to extort money is fraudulent no matter how you slice it.

I used to work for Office Depot..and at the one we worked for you could get away with a lot. At least $1500 worth of stuff was stolen every month. There was on one security camera and that only focused on the ink department. It is so damn easy to steal pens/pencils or anything else when no one else is looking. Also...if you steal something and the buzzer goes off at the door...you can just walk on through. You can literally take a computer and walk out and they can't do ****** to you or touch you in case you might sue. The best thing they can do is call the police. We could return any product at any time...but we restricted it to 14 days and like other people...said the computer wouldn't let us do it. If you bitch at us..we will talk ****** about you after we leave, and it DOES get noticed. Also when the store is not up to shape and an employee is doing his best to help you out, give him some slack. It it the customers who fvck up the isles and move everything around...so don't blame it on them. BTW some managers don't care how many things you buy when they're on sale despite what the add says, but some do. It's about 50/50...we used to have teachers buy 50 packs of 10 cent colored pencils and fight over 5 cents.

I have seen white adults stealing stuff in Office Depot and Staples. I shop OD a lot, I once saw a guy in nice suit dump a full box of pens into his coat. I also saw a yuppie looking mom (kids with her) take stuff out of boxes.

The largest drawback to their security is they only mark the box, not the contents...this is why so much packaging is a PITA to open now.

Exactly. The insides of the boxes are almost never counted. Usually if you buy a set of 24__...don't expect to get the full 24.

If all these stores had those fake/optional walmart cameras in the sky, there would be less theft attempts.

let's see.. i've worked in a few places, and each have their own dirt:

starbucks:
1) almost all starbucks employees (or anywhere else) nowadays do NOT know how to make proper espresso-based beverages. i was lucky enough to work for the regional trainer (most starbucks employees are trained by others who have no idea how to make a proper cup of.. anything) they will do any or all of these things:
- burn your milk (170+ degrees)
- make the shot go stale (you have ~10s to use an espresso shot, so the proper way is to steam the milk, THEN pull the shot)
- if you complain about something legit (read above), the manager will give you a coupon for 1 or more drinks
- use "pre-made" foam. they make a bunch of foam from steaming a pitcher of milk, and leave it in a pitcher, to be scooped for subsequent beverages. this often makes the drink worse than not having foam, at all.

2) well-known PC e-tailer (i can't say which one, but i guarantee that you would all know)
- there's only 1 RMA employee: he/she have been informed to refuse returns, if possible. the terms claim a 30-day limit, but the system has a feature that can extend it indefinitely. it saves them man-hours. do NOT sound like a b1tch in your email. just as most of the posts here suggest, be nice, and you will have your case closed quickly and to your favor.
- we had no qualms with selling used merchandise as new, if the customer can't tell
- shipping errors occur around 1-3%, we paid for return shipping

3) on-site tech for a small Sun-Certified reseller, and linux/unix b-to-b firm
- we WILL use old parts to replace another defective part under the 1-year parts/service agreement. in this case, you are far worse off than before. chances are, the part used to replace yours was taken from another replacement service order. always ask to confirm that these replacement parts are brand new, especially if it's under warranty. we once had a troublesome client (Global Unichip in Santa Clara) who ran their server rooms at near sauna temperatures. we had sold them a 3TB RAID-5 server which began degrading on a regular basis. my manager had me replace one defective drive with another; we were simply rotating them.
- trouble-free customers will often get lower prices as time goes on (lower overhead)
- you probably won't get most of the accessories that were supposed to have come with your parts. extra screws/jumpers/connectors/cables/etc. we keep those for ourselves
- do NOT buy extended service agreements. at the of the 1-year, that extra 10-15% can buy you some much better, NEW parts.

hope some of these help

Let's see here...
Construction - some city governments will contribute large fractions of renovation costs for old/abandoned homes, especially in bad neighborhoods. Some cities will reimburse 75-100% of the total costs.

Janitor - not much to say, except that a janitor in a doctor's office generally has access to all paper files and charts.

Kirby vacuum salesman - always ask for the demo model. It will be the one that the salesman is using in his demo. It would be this same vacuum even if you didn't ask for the demo price. When I was selling, the cost was $1699, but we could go as low as $999. The first $350 were straight comission for me, unless you had bad credit. I was always willing to go down to $999 because we had lots of incentives just to push numbers, so even if I couldn't get any comission, it was still worth selling.

Air Force research contractor - your tax dollars paid me to play soccer at lunch.

Wastewater treatment plant research - tampon applicators and condoms do not get broken down or settle out. The plant operators literally have to pick them out by hand. The plant I worked at produced up to 2000 pounds of snails per day, which reaked havoc on the pumps. Sometimes when it rained, the piping couldn't handle it and the sewage would flood the plant. If a wastewater plant smells, it's because it's not operating correctly (needs more oxygen).

Functional ocular prosthetic research - everyone needs reading glasses or bifocals when you're 40. Don't wait. If you're in your early-mid 20's, consider LASIK - it's worth it financially. Researchers in my field implant electrodes in monkeys' brains to alter their focus. Ophthalmologists can do everything an optometrist can and a whole lot more. Chemical engineers are supposed to know everything that all of the other engineering disciplines know, but we're never actually taught any of it.

'Biomedical' is just another buzzword, like 'nanotechnology' or 'biotechnology'. It doesn't really mean anything, but people throw it around to sound important. My research deals with bionanotechnology. See? You know even less about it than you did before.

IT Job
Usually when there's a problem with a computer, it's the user's fault. Literally, 9 times out of 10 the user did something stupid. For example, there was this guy who accidentally deleted all of his excel/word documents when he cleaned his temporary files. Here's how he saved word files!
1) Make word file, write in it, do normal user things
2) Save As, direct file to the temporary files folder (WHY?)
3) Go to start->documents, right click on word file in the list, make a shortcut and send it to the My Documents folder
You can see how this is a bad idea. It works so long as you don't ever tell Windows to delete your temporary files in the temporary folder. Suddenly you'll have a bunch of shortcuts in My Documents that don't even point to anything!

Grading for an introductory physics course for 3 semesters
- If you're very smart with cheating, you can get away with it even if we catch you. Glancing at a neighbor's paper is not enough to get you caught. There's no way we can state with 100% confidence that you were copying answers unless you foolishly copy answers form a different test form!
- Some professors will have different colored tests, indicating that there are 2 test forms. Obviously people with the blue test shouldn't copy off of people with the white test. Some professors tka ehtis one step further and make different forms of colored tests, so that you can't be sur eif your blue test is the same as someone else's blue test! In other words, there's a Blue Test A and a Blue Test B, so you can easily be caught there
- The punishment for cheating generally fits the crime. If you would have gotten a good grade in a course, then you'll fail the course. If you were going to fail or get a D anyway, then your transcript will receive a black mark indicating that you've cheated, and no school will accept you for a minimum of 2.5 years. That's when the black mark is removed for some reason. I think it may vary from school to school.
- Going to class makes a huge difference in how well you perform on tests. It doesn't matter how much natural intelligence you have. You can get the same grade if you either go to class or take 3x more time studying on your own.
- Many grading decisions are fudged and done on the fly. Two people may do the same thing on a test question and receive different scores.
- If you complain to the average professor about a test grade, chances are that you'll receive more points if you make a convincing argument and actually know what you're doing. Some professors go the other way though and will end up removing more points than you originally had.
- When the professor jokes that he and his TAs are going to grade the exams over pizza and beer, he's actually being serious.
- We laugh at stupid written responses. We laugh heartily. Sometimes we laugh nonstop for 5+ minutes from just one response. We appreciate your bizarre responses
- We go easier on your other problems if you leave one of them completely blank. If you fish for the right answer, we are merciless on the rest of your problems. If you realize that you don't know how to do a problem, just write that and you'll probably receive mercy.
- Nicely drawn pictures are greatly appreciated, even if they have nothing to do with the problem

As an extreme example, take a 100ft x 2ft strip of grass. For these purposes, your mower is 1ft wide. Which would be more efficient, going around the perimeter of it, or going back and forth 50 times?

Now just take that reasoning and expand it to any typical yard-- the only time when the time would be equal would be if your lawn was perfectly square.

I'm 21, and my optometrist said that my glasses prescription is really too weak ro warrant LASIK. And I don't really know how it works, which makes me apprehensive.

I feel similarly about Physicists as you do about Chemical Engineers. We're expected to know everything about electronics, op-amps, etc. that an electrical engineer knows when in actuality we barely know anything about circuits. Computer engineering as well, we never take any programming courses (unless as an elective) but are expected to know at minimum Fortran and C++.

 to last paragraph, biomedical is definitely no more meaningful than "synergy"

That's assuming that you turn the lawnmower around at some point. When I mow I tend to go forward, backward, forward, backward in a vertical/horizontal motion. I wager that it's even faster than your circular method In the extreme example, you'd mow 100ft walking forward and 100ft walking backward, so the lawnmower never turns around. Dragging is faster
