A business that can pay you over middle 6 figures probably has secrets.

I am night managing a Days Inn. My day job isn't going too well.

no matter how good your rate was just ask if they have a better one when you show up..

I often save about 20-30% of my stays each year.

when going to the dr's office get an itemized bill. You will always be over billed.

when ordering a long island ice tea tell them to make it the old school way, new bottles have it premixed which is 4 x's diluted.

if you are diabetic and need a meter call one of the major manufactuers (accu check, bayer, one touch) and tell them yours broke. they will send a new one and wont ask for the old one back.

call clorox and tell them that their faulty lid caused your rug to stain. they will send out a 50$ at most without proof to you to compensate for their faulty product.

You were doing pretty good up until the fraud at the end.

freaking fraud...i hate it. I could have been a millionaire in the 80's doing overnight CC fraud.

CompUSA: Buy TAP (our extended service plan) and we'll probably give you $50-$100 off your main purchase because warranties are at least 50% profit. If you act like an idiot, WE WILL make fun of you. If you want your PC fixed first, bring a twelve pack of corona's and a pint of crown, it will be done by the end of the day, guarenteed. Most of the time, if you buy a replacement plan and we don't carry the product, we'll give you the next better thing and write off the difference. And if its not obviously accidentally damaged, we'll prolly take it. Oh, our perphial tap covers OCing.

-most of the "security staff" doesnt actually read your recipt. They just check it off, so you could possibly add numerous small items to your cart and walk right out the front door.

-pay cash, switch anything like old ram, old/smaller hard drives etc, and return it in the *new items box since the CS agents dont know anything about the products.

At Best Buy, our Customer Service has us check a lot of things for them before they honor the return.. especially on computer products and other high-tech stuff.

-we had a guy return an open item computer to us, of course after he had switched out the ram, hdd, and cpu.

-Had an employee actually steal CC numbers of customers by "requiring a manual receipt form" and then rang his brother out for thousands of $$ in gift cards. (got greedy and caught as well heh)

For NJ toll violations, if you have a SpeedPass, just send them a check for the 0.25 cents or whatever the original toll was. Do NOT pay the $25 fine.

They will happily cash your 0.25 cents check and move on.

I work in insurance.
Only the brokers that sell the product need to be licensed. Those of us that underwrite the product (what is sold - rates, terms and conditions, etc.) do not need to be licensed.
About 30% of my brokers do not understand the product they are selling.

The simplest way to get a monitor replaced by Dell is this:

Dell has a monitor self test which requires the user to disconnect the video card cable and check if it is displaying something. If it does not, Dell would usually dispatch a relacement monitor if it is within warranty. So if you have a problem with a monitor and do not want to troubleshoot it or anything or if you caused the problem yourself, wait till the tech asks you to disconnect the video card cable, then deny anything you see at all on the monitor screen (Usually the monitor would display the selftest screen) then the tech has to begin the procedure for the dispatch!!!!

My manager sold a 500k software contract to the goverment for a prototype piece of software I wrote. It was never finished and was never viable since I am not a programmer. He had me gave demos of it and it was just a canned piece of GUI screens (there wasn't really a backend database driving the data). I got frustrated and quit many years ago.

Record labels take the majority of money from the artist/performer. It gets worse with the major labels. We get only a few cents per CD or Record (after the wholesale cost @ ~ $5 or $6 each) and make most of our money through live performances and merchandise. Support your favorite musician/band by going to their gigs and/or buying t-shirts, posters, etc.

QFT. I like my boss's analogy of the relationship between artist and record label. He called it the "pimp/hoe relationship" where the recording label is the pimp and the artist is the hoe.

Artists also have to pay to use the recording labels studio and studio bands in some cases. They will front you the money and expect you to pay them back, all the while you only get a few cents per album. They do make most of their money from live gigs.

As a matter of fact, I know one guy who got this line from a recording label (no names to protect all parties involved). "We want you to go on tour to promote the album." Basically wanting him to turn tricks to make the record label money.

When I say it's a pimp/hoe relationship, I mean it.

My coworkers and I have taken the same stance with our VP. It's a lot easier to just do it the fscked up way the first time around then spend weeks debating over it. Many objectives are accomplished this way:

1. I don't have to argue
2. VP looks arrogant in the end
3. Actually takes less time to do it wrong and then do it right, versus argue and then do it right.
4. VP is gradually learning to trust people to do their jobs instead of trying to tell everyone how to do their jobs.

New York Times fired all their Classified Ad taking staff. Our company takes all NTY classified ads (except display ads).

So if you ever think you got screwed in a transaction because of terms you agreed to, a lawyer might be able to dig you out.

Here is a piece of advice from a 11th year attorney:

Do NOT ever take legal advice from a law student. Law students do not know a damn thing about practicing law. Most <3 years attorneys are not much better, either.

Also:

Do not try to win an argument with a business or a cop by saying that you are a law student/lawyer or that your relative/friend is a law student/lawyer - It only pisses them off. I learned that one from watching the reactions to my law school/attorney friends.
