Hi

I am looking to build a new computer and am looking for new case fans. I am hoping for a silent computer operation. All my VC, CPU, Chipset and RAM will be cool with water. I would need some case fans that are very quiet for the computer. I am also putting my new computer in the p180. The best air flow and quietest fast I've found so fat is the Scythe S-Flex. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Below is a link of the 3 different models of this fan with air flow and noise level. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.

S-FLEX?" S-FDB 120mm Quiet FAN

Thanks

Enermax has the Enlobal 120mm fans too that are pretty quiet. I got a couple in my sig rig and I like them.

can't go wrong with Yate Loons that spin at 1350rpm for about $5 or Nexus fans which spin at 1000rpm

OMG YATES RULEZZZ!!!!1111111BBQ

I've gotten to the point where I get what I can lay my hands on. I've got so many fans lying around my wife thinks I'm going to film an 80's hair band video. Some fans have a lower decibel rating but the sound they put out is a) more annoying or b) doesn't mesh well with the other moving parts in your rig.

General rule of thumb is to get a fan that's faster than you need and slow it down, either by lowering voltage to the fan or PWM control). You can always speed it up when you need to. Slow it down by hardware fan controllers like the sunbeam rheobus, fanmate, etc. which are normally voltage controls, software like speedfan or motherboard addons, which are normally PWM, or switching up wires (the least useful, since you can't adjust the fan speed on the fly).

notes: 1) Some fans react poorly to PWM and get a faint *click.* 2) Most digital fan controllers like the CoolDrive, Hardcano, and Sunbeam Theta control fan speeds via PWM. The Sunbeam Theta is pretty freakin cool though.

Scythe, Noctua, and some Arctic Cooling FDBs are considered by a lot of people the best noise/lifespan/dBa ratio, at least for fans you can find at multiple retailers. And the "high" rpm Noctua NF-S12-1200 can be hard to find in stock.

Yate Loon SL's are budget, but quality fans but they have a certain...I don't know...when they're run at full speed I just don't like the way they sound. Most people undervolt them anyway.

Consensus is that the Nexus low speed are undervolted Yate Loons and you're just paying a rebadging premium, but I seem to remember there was a woman who described exactly how they weren't undervolted...I'd love to find that thread again.

There's also the holy grail of 120mm fans, the Sanyo Denki San Ace, that's pretty tough to find but talk to Zepper or GY and they may be able to hook you up. It's a 120x38 (instead of the common 120mmx25mm) though so that can nix some plans in tight spaces. Oh, and when I say it's that good, it's because when you slow it down, the amount of air it pushes with virtually a whisper is better than 95% of the fans out there.

Hell, I don't know. I've gotten bitter in the fan department, mainly because my PSU is whining and my 8800GTS dumps too much hot air in the case.

And I separated my collarbone.

So anyway, get the freakin S-Flex, you'll love it.

I highly recommend Performance-PCs.com. Not because of their prices, but because they're run by a guy that really gives a crap about his products and his customers. Hank's gone above and beyond a few times for me, and I'll gladly pay those prices to get that service.

I've used a bunch of Yate Loon's now and the only thing I hear is air movement, absolutely no bearing or motor noise. I don?t think I would go with anything else for a 120mm case fan.

At 12v, mounted in a case the air they move is clearly audible in a quiet room but the sound is not at all annoying; very smooth and non-intrusive. Once you start slowing them down via motherboard fan controls or manual fan controllers they become practically inaudible.

The Enermax Enlobal fans are SILENT. They run at 1,000RPM so a decent amount of air is moved...SILENTLY. My hard drive during idle time is louder than these things. And the blades can be removed and cleaned easily. Magnetic bearing FTW!

GlobalWin 120mm NCB fans are near-silent when undervolted <9V, and barely audible at full-speed (1300RPM) with no motor hum. They are a good choice if you want a ball-bearing fan (i.e. for higher heat or dust applications), and do not click when undervolted via PWM.

$6 at SVC: http://svc.com/1202512l.html

I have purchased three of these fans over the past year, and the noise characteristics/quality have been consistent so far. Good reports from members over at SPCR as well.

The Arctic Cooling AF12 is quiet (unless the bearing is damaged in shipping). I also find the Yate Loon and the Global Win to be acceptably quiet. There are many more that can be dialed back for very good quietude while still giving good air.

I, too, have built very quiet comps with both the Yates and Global Wins.

Agree with the Yate Loons and Global Win. I tried both since they can be had for cheap. When undervolted both perform about the same. At normal voltage, I prefer the Yate Loons.

I used to be exclusively Cooler Master...then I tried two YLs and concluded the excessive motor noise in CMs to be crap. My case now runs on two YLs and one rifle bearing Cooler Master 120mm. My parents' case still uses a couple 80mm CMs and a 120mm rifle bearing CM...but no complaints there...

How do the Yate Loons compare to more expensive fans like Noctua and SilenX (at stock speeds)?
