With some the reason is apparent, as a number of immigration lawyers have been told to leave, regardless of the fact they are US born citizens.
What other commonality is causing these people to be targeted?

Are they brown?​

Is their name foreign sounding?​

Are they registered democrats?​

Are they active in the Democratic Party?​

Did they make political donations to a democratic candidate?​

Did they have a yard sign supporting Harris?​

Since DHS has admitted a couple of them were sent in error, yes, DHS is the source.

We really have no way of knowing how many have been sent to US Citizens, as they only come to light when the recipient contacts their local TV station.

More and more foreign countries are recommending that if you must go to the US, don't take your smartphone, but carry a burner phone to prevent Trump's government goons from going through you phone, social media, etc.

My daughter just had a wonderful vacation to England and Scotland, a trip she has been planning since last summer. She had planned her return to the US by taking several measures to hopefully not be harasses or have her privacy rights trampled upon her return. She enrolled in Global Entry, where an extensive background check was done before she left the country. It did greatly expedite her return to the banana republic of America. She also didn't carry her smartphone, but packed it, and carried her work provided phone, which has only work stuff on it. They didn't go through the phone, but did swab it for explosives.

I hear that it's wise to turn off your phone when you go through security. If they take your phone they can't access data, etc. without your PIN. Heard that they can't make you provide your PIN.

Or…maybe…put that money towards hiring more judges and staff to properly process legal asylum claims, expedite the claims for those who cannot return to their country of origin (war, famine, gang targets etc.) and offer some incentive (preferred processing, faster work permits) to those who are able to wait it out in a friendly 3rd country.
