If you are getting some very slow speeds, you can call them and they can run a line test from their offices. They can check if there are any problems with the line, etc.
One thing to remember is that DSL speed will vary depending on line distance. I.E, you may get a 1Mbps download speed if you are only 1000 ft from the C.O, but if you are 2000 ft, it may drop to 750Kbps, and so on and so on.
Also the self install is really easy, as long as you have a good understanding of how to configure your computer settings. Same thing with splitter or line filter, depending on what area you are in.
