Sell Titan for gtx 980 ?

I've been out of the tech loop for the last year or so, comments are appreciated. Does selling my (regular) Titan and picking up a GTX 980 make sense ? I'm guessing it would be about a 15 or 20% ish performance upgrade plus less power usage. Is that a wrong assumption ? I game at 1080 atm but will probably spring for a 1440 panel like the rog swift eventually. What cha think

I've seen some going for about $550. I f you don't care about the compute performance, then a 980 would be better.

if you have a titan clocking 1.3 - 1.4 Ghz I would request you to hold on. those benches you see of titan are all stock clocks. Titan scales brilliantly and you will not be gaining much with a 980 if you consider max oc vs max oc. the perf gain could be < 10% and you would also be giving up 2GB VRAM.

you can see a 5% diff between 980 gaming and 780 ti gaming . the titan would be roughly 5% slower than 780 ti / titan black at same clocks.

If you primarily game and if you can get $550 for your Titan, I can't see any reason not to make the switch. It's practically a free upgrade.

Ahh, that's a good point, but one would be gaining the new features like DSR, HDMI 2.0, etc, lower power consumption.

that would be my key note...

According to Adam's test its noticeable... 70W per card on average... with a lower idle power draw on top... runs a lot cooler then titans as well.
(but winter is coming so i guess heat output is moot)

If u dont care about power, id hold onto the titans until the 980ti's come out

Speed difference varies between games. I had a Titan @ 1123MHz and now I'm running a 980 at ~1480MHz. I sold the Titan for $750 about 2 months ago and now I'm on the 980.

Witcher 2 with Ubersampling at 1080p is about 30% faster on the 980. But Crysis 3 is about the same speed, sometimes slightly faster, sometimes slightly slower. Some older DX9 games that need more brute force power, like NWN2, I found the 980 to be about 20% slower than the Titan.

Even at 1080, with g sync, there are times when the fps of games does not satisfy my eyes.

The resolution of your monitor sounds nice, but that 60hz and low response time would make me physically sick.

Devs don't want to use compression anymore. OP, keep the Titan. The extra VRAM matters.

Yeah, raw FPS would increase by a lot, but I've found the single card experience to be much smoother, plus I hear SLI isn't playing well with G Sync yet

I guess just wait until the 30th. We'll see if Middle Earth really uses 6Gb of VRAM and has any worthwhile visual difference at that setting.

It is a serious question. The suggested vram requirement for ultra textures in the new Mordor game is 6gb. Seems insane to me, and it remains to be seen if it is a groundbreaking game or just a sloppy console port. I suspect the latter, but we will know in a few days.

Hold on to your Titan for a bit longer. Within the next few months we should start to see what kind of Vram is needed for upcoming games. Not to mention the 8gb 980 should be here.

Yes, hang onto Titan IMO. Still a beast mode card like the 980. Wait to upgrade until you can get bigger performance jump.

My card only gets to 1.1 ghz, I was thinking about getting a really ovrrclocked 980 with an aftermarket cooler, or it's probably not worth the switch.
