Selling for Conroe?

I'm currently thinking about upgrading my setup- I'm debating between the fairly easy and cheap upgrade to an X2 3800+ overclocking, or the much more difficult and expensive upgrade to LGA775 and Conroe.

My current setup is an Opteron 144 (@ 2.4 GHz), DFI NF4 Ultra-D, Patriot 2GB of RAM (DDR400, 2-3-2-5) and an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro. Whether or not I can get Conroe depends on how much I can get for these items. Do you think I could sell them as a bundle for $350-400? Should I sell them as a bundle or as individual units? I'll have to do some research about Conroe, but I think what I want should cost $700~

Well that system is more than $400 but it's not easy to find people wanting to pay for a whole system..better part it out.

oh..another thing..I'd wait for the demand to die down and even out the prices on Conroe. I JUST built a 939 system in may..if knew Conroe was so affordable i would've waited. By then u should have a nice selection of MB to choose from.

The only thing demanding I do on my PC is gaming. I really want to get a dual-core CPU, without a doubt, so that's the first thing that influences my want to upgrade. I also want to upgrade becuase I want something just generally faster than my OC'd Opty.

You don't need a really fast cpu to game....just a good video card. Maybe you should upgrade that component instead.

yeah im also considering doing the same thing, just doing a temp upgrade to a x2 3800/4200 and then waiting till the prices drop on the duo 2.....makes more sense...instead of spending 400-500 on a cpu that in a few months, will cost 300-400 like it should. not to mention i need new ram that i can oc.....the stuff i got now, doesnt oc worth crap. anyone know any relativly in-expensive ram that'll oc pretty decent?

Actually, trueno, it's most likely your 3500 Winchester that's holding you back. What RAM do you have now, and which processor are you wanting to buy RAM to overclock with?

You really couldn't go wrong with a $150 X2 3800+. It'd be a fine stop-gap until Conroe prices settle down and motherboards settle out.

Since I play @ 1280x1024, the CPU comes into play more than usual, and I already have an X1900XT which is more than enough for what I do. There's really not much to upgrade to, besides the 7950GX2, and whether or not that's a true upgrade is debatable.

The motherboard is what is sort of holding me back. Since I'd want to overclock to 3GHz+, I'd need a good mobo- and a good Conroe motherboard at this time seems to be $200-250. I only payed $120 for my current mobo, and aside from no SLI/Crossfire support, it's pretty "top of the line."

Plenty of 965 overclocking boards for under 150.

Aiming for 3GHz on air is a bit ambitious. I've seen recent 3800+ that can reach it but by no means is it guaranteed. I'd lower that bar just a bit and expect in the 2.6 - 2.8 arena.

No, I was talking about with an E6600 if I go Conroe

I'm aiming for 2.6 if I go 3800+.

I thought if you wanted to overclock well you'd need a real "Enthusiast" board such as the ASUS ones for $250+. I though the 965 boards were more for your average consumer who doesn't OC/want advanced features. You sure they overclock well?

I guess, like most things, it comes down to how much $ you want to plop down. And whether you are concerned with P/P ratio or just want the best, period.

If I was that kind of guy I wouldn't be on here asking questions and would have ordered an X6800 and some $400 RAM

I'll have to think about it. If I can get that SonyStyle credit card deal that's $100 of my purchase..... so that could be something to sweeten up the deal.

Depends on how far and how exotic a cooling solution you have.

I've heard that the i965 Gigabyte board does decent O/Cing, but it's limited, like most 9xx boards by the FSB. I think people have hit limits @ 320 or so. the x6800 (way too expensive) has an unlocked multiplier, which will help, but again, price/performance gets in the way.

Either way, if you just want to game, and are able to use a higher AMD or X2 chip (I don't use AMD chips, so I am not sure what is compatible with your mobo), I would do that, especially with the prices so low for AMD chips, that way you can wait until Kentsfield releases, which will lower C2D prices, but then you might want a Kentsfield chip.

I wonder if the opterons dropped prices at all.. if it did get a cacje 144.. I got it for 150 before people really knew about them from Tankguys.

The Opteron's having dropped in price, but they're bad deals now with the price cuts on EVERYTHING but Opterons.

Not if you play games on the doom3 engine. Q4, Prey, and et qw requires more cpu / ram then video at resoultions lower then 1024x768

The Opteron's having dropped in price, but they're bad deals now with the price cuts on EVERYTHING but Opterons.

Yep, AMD is making mad bank on their server chips... I wouldn't expect a price drop on them anytime soon.
