No I don't ass clown. I talked to an Intel Rep at the local Microx store and he told me the only reason you would truly ever need a 64 bit OS is for Server Racks. I asked him why it would be important for gaming and he said "It really won't make that much of a difference, the 32bit processors aren't going to be replaced, merely put aside. If you're not trying to run a game hosting service from your house there is NO need for a 64 bit chip."

REMEMBER you're talking to a INTEL rep. of course he'll dismiss 64bit cause intel dosent have a 64bit processor. if he said "64bit is important. it can speed up games a lot. look how the 2.5ghz!MD64 with it's superior 64bit and IPC kicks our 3.8GHZ ass!" he wouldve lost a sale.

In addition, to what mwmorph said about the Intel reps motives... 64 bit processors will speed up gaiming some due to the extra amount registers available on the chip. You won't see mindboggling increases in speed but there will be some modest gains. But, seriously, never trust a rep from a company that is trying to sell you their product over a competitors. You should have asked him, if 64 bit computing is so useless for personal computing and gaming, then why is intel releasing a 64 bit processor aimed at the home market this year?

You don't really believe he spoke to any Intel rep now, do you? Come on......

The only thing Intel ever said about 64bits for the desktop that I can remember was that they weren't bringing out a desktop 64bit chip for a while. They said that a long time ago. Seems like they told the truth. Still no desktop 64bit chip, and no loss to Intel for not having one out yet.

64bits is not the reason the Athlon64 is faster than the P4, though. It would still be faster without the 64bit extensions. At the moment I believe for games, 64bit windows is still slower than 32bit windows.

Why does AMD keep making 32bit chips, if 64/32bit ones are superior?

I know for a fact that with very little effort the AMD Sempron 3100 (currently 115) bucks can outperform the living crap of the athlon 64 3400.

You can back that claim up any time you get ready.......

And before you freak out and start waving a red flag saying those Athlon 64 bit processors aren't OC'd, it's not fair, look at the pricewatch.com comparisons of the processors...

$122 - Sempron 3100+
$197 - Athlon 64 3400
Yes, 70 dollars does mean something to me, before you throw that in my face. I'm not loaded.

Did you even read Zebo's post assclown?

In case you missed it here's what Zebo said & i agree with him.

umm...

1. A64 2800 is same Ghz as Sempron 3100, Both 1.8
2. A64 2800 is 3% faster at stock speed due to 512 KB cache vs 256
3. A64 2800 is 64 bit compatable making it infinity faster than a Sempron 3100 on Win XP 64 coming next month
4. A64 2800 has NX bit which prevents malice/virus
5. A64 2800 will overclock the same as sempron 3100, retaining it's performance superiority thoughout overclock.
6. A64 2800 is $8 more money or 6%

Now you can see only a fool would buy a Sempron 3100 ATM.

Yeah those are all the same processor, but keep in mind that there is a differene between when the chip is shown in a box and when it's not. Assuming you need a heatsink for socket 754, and I think you probably do, you should go with one of the 2800 AX's in the retail packaging. Run you about $10+ more than the chip alone.

16 GPR's in 64bit Longmode (i think it is called Longmode) and, in fact, some benchmarks have shown gains in 32bit!, yes 32bit, under Windows XP 64. The 64bit AMD cpu offers more than true access to more than 4gigs of system memory. I have seen some encoding benchmarks in 64bit that were amazing. 50-100% gains. It all depends on the application.

Also, why did Intel make the x86-64 compatible cpus for release this year for John Q public if it isn't necessary and AMD doesn't have a clue what it is doing? I believe Intel just a few years ago laughed at AMD and stated that 64bit would not be necessary until 2010 and suddenly its 2005 and behold Intel 64bit/32bit chips! I love competition
