It's not illegal to be stupid. It's also not illegal for employee to accept that higher income based off hopes, dreams, and stupidity.. It's also not illegal to throw around your high profile father's name to gain an advantage. Basically, Hunter played them. I mean he said that despite Republicans blowing up the deficit in the past we shouldn’t judge them on their past actions and should vote for them anyway because apparently this time they really mean it.

SCOTUS rulings have made it very difficult to convict in these cases. Proving the quid pro quo necessary is difficult because the law has been narrowed. Just giving money to a politician isn’t enough, and then proving it resulted in the crook using his official powers in return is complicated. The feds say they have a lot more evidence than the last time they went after him and failed. His previous indictment was dropped for this very reason. If DOJ is going after him again, they must have iron clad evidence of a quid pro quo.

I wonder what Schumer’s move is here. I’d imagine the only reason he’s not already calling for Menendez’ resignation is because he knows it would just make him dig in more, and is trying to find some kind of soft landing to usher him out the door. Not sure how possible that is, though.

I remember when the Feds found $400,000 in William Jeffersons freezer and indicted him for bribery. While under indictment, he ran for reelection and lost to a no-name Republican in one of the most Democratic House seats in the country. And New Jersey is blue, but the Republicans out there aren’t hapless. They came within three points of knocking off Phil Murphy in 2021. Finally, with Menendez on the ballot Democrats will now have to spend money on this race that they will desperately need to protect seats in WV, OH, MT, NV, MI, WI and PA.

Senate Democrats need him gone. The problem is they don’t have any good way to force the issue.
