Question Separate torrenting and work

Owner of the house I will soon move in uses cable internet for work. My use of internet includes torrent downloading of the dramas from the country I was born in. Torrenting may cause virus infection. I asked the cable company if we could get 2 lines of service. Answer was no. Is there a way to prevent torrent-associated contamination from spreading to the owner's PC?

You want TWO routers, one, the "outer" router, would be connected to the ISP, and then to YOU.

The "inner" router, would be connected with it's WAN port connected to a LAN port of the "outer" router. That router would be for your Landlord.

Advantage? His PC is protected from yours, because, behind his router, your PC looks like it's just another PC on the internet.

Disadvantage? Double-NAT. If he does certain things on his connection, then double-NAT maybe "break" those things.

Another possibility, would be for you to get your own VPN that you pay for, and torrent using that (recommended), and then put the VPN client into a router, and connect that router's WAN port to the LAN port of your Landlord's ISP router, and thus, anything you do, will be connected over the VPN.

im curious how torrents cause virus? i suppose you can use a VPN with a router and download them directly to the router? im not following the virus's part. Are there movie virus's now where i watch a video file with vlc and it takes over?

Torrent sites have many flashing adult content advertisements. I was guessing downloading anything from such sites would infect my PC. In fact, I switched from Windows to Ubuntu because of this concern. Just ignore my uneducated guess.

Of the 2 layouts, I will do the recommended VPN method. Please confirm this diagram.

(ISP modem) ---> (WAN -- Landlord router -- LAN) ---> (WAN -- my router with VPN -- LAN) ---> my PC. Did I get it right?

The goal is the landlord's work does not get adversely affected by my internet activities. Thank you much for the guidance

Doing any torrent activities is going to affect the network, more or less, and it usually is more. And if you don't use VPN, downloading illegal contents is very likely to cause ISP's attention and cause trouble for the landlord, if the trouble is big enough, you probably will be kicked out.

The wiring diagram is right. I don't know if I like the situation in general. It WILL affect your landlord's bandwidth/latency, that's just the nature of torrents. :|

Thank you for confirming the wiring diagram. Regarding landlord's bandwidth and latency, I can pay for higher connection speed (200 Mbps for now to 400 Mbps) and limit torrent speed. Will these do the trick?

Get a "torrent" machine, run a VPN full time on it, throttle in torrent software so you don't crush his connection, and/or set active times to off hours.

400mbps for soap opera drama from another country! wowow i can imagine the quality is very limiting from that kind of torrent i wonder why need such speed. What i would do is download the torrents with a router so i dont have to dedicate a whole machine to it, you can set the bw limiting in the router as well. upload limit to 1mbps download to 100mbps which it will never hit anyway. I highly doubt the owners of such drama television shows will figure out a way to send your isp a request to STOP sharing, but i guess it is possible if they are linked somehow to the DCMA.
