I just got off the phone with my mom. She called, in a more serious tone than usually to tell me some bad news. She went to the doctor today and was officially diagnosed with Diabeties. I feel weird posting something this personal and private on the ATOT, but I've never know anyone close who had Diabeties. She was in good spirits and said, "information is so key, and I respect the disease".

I dont know what this means (her having the disease, not what she said), but I plan on doing some reading here ASAP to find out more about it. Shes not on insulin shots or anything (yet), just some medication. I told her how much my wife and I love and support her. I never showed sadness, only love, support and laughed a little with her about our recent trip out there to see them.

Now that we're off the phone I'm sad and a little scared.

that sucks, but its totally live-able.....just gotta do the blood tests, and insulin shots, and being abit careful on what she eats (depending on the type of diabeties .... one that needs sugar? one that doesnt?)

sucks to have it, just have to work around it

That does suck... but my Grandpa lived with it for years just by watching his diet.

I also know a couple of people that need insulin (sp?) and do just fine.

So it's life changing... but not something to panic over. (My $0.02)

While it will require somewhat of a lifestyle change, diabetes is VERY treatable and those with the disease can live a normal healthy life.

I have been diabetic since the 3rd grade (now 26 years old). The first few months may be tough, but once you get in "the groove" it really isn't that much of an issue.

Diet and excercise will be key to good blood sugar control for your mom. She has type II diabetes (not requiring insulin shots - although this *could* change). Just support her in making the right choices (mainly diet realted, but excercise makes a HUGE differnce) and everything will be fine!

sucks but entirely livable... just a change in life style. News can always be worse than what you get. Its not an inoperable brain tumor, cancer or something worse. Count your blessings.

So she has diabetes, but she's gone for a long time without insulin shots. I think the situation should be okay. Diabetes isn't such a big deal if you keep it under control.

Sorry to hear that . A friend's father passed away last year from the effects of diabetes, but he had lived well with it for decades.

On the exercise side, depending on finances (yours and hers) you might be able to help with a gym membership or buying a stationary bike, treadmill or elliptical machine for home use. Just be sure to spend enough, there is a huge quality difference between a $300 bike and a $1,000 LifeCycle.

My mom was diagnosed with it at age 40, she is now 77 and still living well and is very healthy. She has always been fanatical about whatching her diet and monitoring her blood sugar levels, I think this is the key

my dad, dads brother, dads sister, and dads dad all have it. it sucks, but its very livable.

since my dad is a doctor, he takes only a couple of pills a day. i asked him about it one day, and he said its not that bad at all, but you just cant eat too much sugar...? i dont know about the last part, cause that didnt make sense to me.

my dad was diagnosed with it in his 40's i think.

its all controllable, dont worry!
