TOKYO (Reuters) - A U.S. court has ruled against Japan's Canon Inc. (7751.T: Quote, Profile, Research) in a patent dispute over flat-panel displays, saying the company violated the license agreement it had with Nano-Proprietary Inc. (NNPP.OB: Quote, Profile, Research).

The ruling is a blow to Canon's endeavor to enter the $84 billion global flat-TV market using technology owned by Texas-based Nano-Proprietary.

According to a ruling issued on Thursday, Judge Samuel Sparks of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas said Nano-Proprietary had the right to terminate the license agreement it signed with Canon in 1999.

It'd be nice if they'd go to say Samsung or one of the bigger players in televisions/monitors and license it to them. Canon seemed to be taking their sweet time in doing anything with it.

Damn. I really want to get a bigger and newer monitor, but I don't want to deal with the disadvantages of LCD's.

Yep, looks like we'll have to hang in there for OLED to hit the market full force. I don't see SED making it any longer.

Meanwhile, OLED looks set replace LCD

SED is nowhere while OLED is already on the market

I saw 30" SED demo units (was told they were 720p) from Canon at CES last year (didn't go this year), and the reps told me they had plans to sell them in '06 in Japan. Looked pretty nice -- better color and contrast than LCD, probably on par with a good plasma. So it's not like they don't work. I don't know what happened with the patents, but it clearly wasn't good. Hopefully another company will step in, or Canon will renegotiate and be able to actually bring products to market.

OLED is (slowly) taking over the market for small screens, like in cellphones and digital cameras. If/when they fix the longevity and manufacturing issues for big displays, it may really start to displace LCD.

From one of those articles:

"OLEDs will be the mainstream display in like 2010, when its economy of scale can be realized," an industry insider said.

FEAR NOT!!!! Something else is cruising on in from a horizon we can at least see.

Laser TV/Monitors

"Laser TV, available in Australia in 2007, boasts double the clarity of its predecessors for less money.

Developed by Silicon Valley-company Arasor, Laser TV uses an optical drive chip to turn infrared laser into red, blue and green light to generate images on a screen.

And Australia can take a lot of the credit for the breakthrough with local investors funding the technology to become a commercial application.

Unveiled for the first time in Australia yesterday, the Laser TV produces a picture which features deep blacks, rich colour and almost 3D-like picture depth complete with a full high definition resolution of 1920 x 1080.

Up to eight high profile manufacturers are looking to invest in the technology while Mitsubishi, already a popular manufacturer of consumer electronics, announced it will be bringing a Laser TV to market in the US in the second half of 2007.

Australia should see its first Laser TVs in 2008.

Korean electronics giant Samsung has also publicly expressed interest in the technology.
Laser TVs, like plasma and LCD, will have the same slim form factor and be available in a range of sizes."

Just 3 years to go then.

Should be absolutely amazing, at least for computer monitors, especially laptops.

Hopefully mainstream means what it should mean, that we'll be able to get decent models earlier than 2010.
