Setting up a DSL connection

Hey guys,

i was called to do a PC trouble shooting house call tonight. The client couldn't connect to the internet with their laptop.

They are using Verizon DSL as their service. I'm not very familiar with setting up DSL connections. I've done cable modem connections and that's easy as pie. All you do is connect the wires and setup TCP/IP and it'll acquire a network address automatically.

As far as I know with DSL, you need to login with a username and password, am I right? I was not able to acquire a IP address automatically. I know if you have the DSL modem hooked up to a router, you login to the router through HTTP and enter the login/password there. But if you do not have a router, how does it work?

Do you login to the DSL modem and then enter the name/pw? Or do you do that elsewhere?

BTW, the PC i'm working on uses Windows 98. I know Windows XP has an internet connection wizard which sets up PPoE and you can enter the login/pw there. But... on Windows 98, how does that work?

The laptop's CDROM drive wasn't working (couldn't read CDs at all), so i couldn't use the CD that came with the modem to help me setup.

thanks in advance for the help guys

The newer dsl modems have pppoe client software built in like a router. Not sure if her router has a clien built in. Best way to check is to see if there's a default gateway when you have your computer to DHCP. Since you're on windows 98, you'll need PPPoE client software on the computer to establish the authentication if the modem is a bridge. You can try Enternet 300 software.

there was no default gateway. The laptop would not acquire any sort of IP address at all.

So am I understanding you correctly?-

if her modem is new, then you can login through HTTP like a router and enter your PPPoE information through there.

if her modem is an older model, you'll need additional software for PPPoE (i.e. the verizon DSL CD).

correct?

Not sure if Verizon ever shipped out modems with built in PPPoE software, but you get the gist.

If she is set up to acquire a IP address automatically and is getting 0.0.0.0 then probably there is something blocking some the DHCP packets. If it was getting no response at all it would give a 169. address. Firewall issue possibly...

You can access a dsl modem via telnet from a 98 machine. You need the IP it is using and then a username and password. Some routers allow you to telnet from them. You could also bypass the router and plug into the DSL modem. Your IP address would have to be in the same network as the internal side of the DSL modem. This would be the default gateway of the router. So if you can see the DG of the router through the HTTP connection to the router you could set up your laptop with a matching network number and disconnect the router and plug the lapptop right into the modem.
If it was workign and stopped working, then it is likely not a setting on the router or DSL modem. It is a laptop issue. Unless they have been goofing with the settings....

One step at a time. Does the Modem have DSL sync?

Edit: I am so glad to be back on DSL.

Where I moved in New Orleans had Charter cable Internet, was down more than up, Modem would never stay synced. When it was up was hardly ever anywhere near 3 meg speed paying for, mostly hung around 500K down and 100K up.

Hooked up DSL and get full 3 meg down and 320K up.
