Setting up my first network

I dont know of this has been previously posted before but Im interested in sharing the same DSL connection on 2 PC's.Im thinking of buying the Linksys DSL Router and a Linksys Ethernet Card.My DSL is connected to my PC via USB,will i have any problems because of this?Or will this setup be fine for gaming? Will i need anything else?I would appreciate links to tutorials on this specific type of networking with the Linksys routers adn networks. THanks

u should be fine...
just make sure you have the router in the corret place...

dsl modem to router the the rest of the comps...

If you want to do it right, you'll need to disconnect your DSL modem from your computer and plug it into the DSL router's Ethernet port. You probably already know that, but I just want to make sure

I have this exact setup, and the wired PCs and router combination work very well. I'm trying to add a wireless PC and am having some difficulty, but I've had the Linksys setup running for about a year now and I think it's excellent.

Before you proceed with any ?Grand planning? make sure that you can exchange or get Ethernet DSL Modem.

Not you much that you can do with USB Modem. None of the current Routers has a USB WAN; thus, you will have to go with some form of software NAT.

How about of i swap my external DSL modem for an internal how will that make any change?I will still be able to hook everytihng up correct?

Router routes the Internet signal to the right computer.

If you Modem is already inside, no place for the Router.

Consumer Cable/DSL Routers (currently) would work only with External Ethernet Modem (DSL or Cable).

So if i have an internal DSL modem what would be needed to share both PC's DSL connection?

1. External Ethernet DSL Modem - Hardware Router - Computers.

2. External USB DSL Modem ? Computer with NIC ? Software NAT ? 2nd Computer.

3. Internal DSL Modem ? Computer with 2 NIC ? Software NAT ? 2nd Computer.


Only solution 1 (External Ethernet DSL Modem) can use Hardware Router (like the Linksys Router), any other solution will not make a use of the Router, and will need Software solution (ICS).

NIC is Network Interface Card.

NAT is Network Address Translation. NAT converts your single WAN, (Wide Area Network, the internet, outside) IP address in to multiple LAN, (Local Area Network, your computers, inside) IP addresses. You can do NAT with hardware (router) or software (ICS in Windows, or other programs like Sygate and AnalogX).
