Setup a mail server

I have a "domain" with a .tk address going to my home computer for hosting. I have a dynamic ip, and use no-ip.com to make the server work. Is it possible to make a mail server for either the *****.no-ip.com address or *****.tk address? Do I need to buy a real .com domain to make this work? How would I go about doing this with lotus domino server? Any help would be much appreciated. If you know anything about domino servers in particular please IM me: neonz5. If nobody knows domino Id be interested in still running some other sort of mail server. Any ideas?

It's pretty easy to set up something like sendmail to do mail serving for whatever you have. I believe you have to set up your MX record in the DNS for your domain to point to your hostname. I haven't done it for a long time but I have one for my dyndns domain and it works. Your server config depends on what program you're gonna use for it.

Domino is probably a bit of overkill for home use unless you really like all the groupware stuff in notes for some reason. That and you'd probably find more support for sendmail in the community, unless of course you're running on NT. Are you?

Then nix the sendmail talk. Don't know what NT/2k has, I think there's a low overhead server in IIS, nothin like exchange, but just mail.

You will probably still want to look at the MX record part though, that helps the other person's mailer or SMTP server know where to send the mail data to.

I know that there is a sendmail port for Win32, but I don't know how good it is. We use Rockliffe Mailsite (not free. at all.) on our Win32 machines, but are moving to Postfix on FreeBSD for performance reasons. I do know that there is a free Win32-based mailer out there called Mercury Mailer ... I installed it one time, and it looks like a decent mail program as long as you're not into heavy duty email serving. I believe that it is oriented towards one domain setups with a manual point and click GUI for user/server management.

Some other good Win32 mailers are IMail, VOPMail and NTMail, but none of those are free.

Also, the mail agent included with IIS is actually just a bastardized version of MS Exchange 5.5's SMTP service; it will send and receive email well, but it does not provide any way to make those messages available by POP3/IMAP. I am sure that it's possible to put a web-based front end onto the incoming mail and parse it out to make it look like IMAP, but that's a little bit too much work to do for a home user. IIS' mailer is designed to send email from forms on websites and doesn't do anything else very well.

For one thing, forget Domino - It's a great application, but it's tremendously complex and, in my opinion, not that great of a mail application. You really don't want to go there, believe me..

There's a lot of good mail apps out there that are quite cheap. I like MDaemon. You can get an eval to check out, and the 6-user license is pretty cheap.

I've been working with IIS 6 for some time now.
It's a major improvement in too many ways to mention. MS have obviously taken the hard lessons they learnt with previous IIS implementations and put them to good use.

Does the IIS 6 mail server support imap? I am currently running Kerio mail server. I don't want to give up imap.
