Should i be worried about static and burning the processor when making my new system? i heard that if u put the processor in the wrong way, the processor is toast.....and also that the static can burn your processor...thats 200 bucks down the drain...should i be worried? how can i stop this stuff?

The processor only goes in one way, unless you bend pins and force it, but static CAN kill anything inside a computer. Use a static strap, and keep your shoes off, and ground yourself to the case (or a grounded appliance) before even touching anything even with the static strap (one end on your wrist, the other on the case, which should be grounded)

Touch the metal chasis of the case and that should ground yourself....

ok good. my carpet never really generates static, as no one gets shocked, but ill make sure ot touch the chasis before i do anything. as long as i put the processor in correctly, i should be fine? i heard that if u dont put the fan on right and start the comp, the processor burns also. jeez im a wussy lol

but to ground yourself, you must and i mean must have the power cable plugged in!!! or else yeah the case isnt grounded and your processor goes byebye!

As a rule of thumb always touch the power supply before touching any components. I generally lean my arm against the closest part of the case while working inside

Maybe I am missing the point here but why in the world would you ever want to be working on the inside of a computer with the power plugged in? Even if the computer is off there is still power going to the MB and other peripherals.

Your carpet isn't a good judge because for you to feel a shock it needs to be a static voltage of a high enough frequency. Unfortunately, this is a lot higher than is needed to burn your computer.

As for the wrong direction, the only way it will go in is if you bend the pins like previously stated. There is usually a little dot on the CPU.

no you must have the power supply in the off positio, but the power supply must be plugged in!

how the hell can a powersupply be grounded w/ somehow being electricly grounded?

so yeah, the powersupply must be turned off, but plugged in

In order for the case to be grounded it must be plugged in! The outlets in your house "if done properly" are grounded to a large copper rod driven into the ground outside your house. If you are worried about the MB disconnect the power supply from it

He is right though, unless your PSU has a physical switch on the back of it - it's always going to be supplying 3.3v to the mainboard while the power cord is in.
That's how the switch works, after all.

However - if im not mistaken there's nothing saying that the power point has to be turned on?
I'd doubt turning it off would disconnect the ground...

Not ON exactly, just plugged in. Just for those who missed it in a previous post " you can disconnect the Motherboard from the power supply "

Yes, plugged into the wall, and UN-plugged from the motherboard. Also, yes, you MUST seat the heatsink/fan unit on the cpu correctly, or in about 7-15 seconds, you will have smoked your cpu. There are pictures and articles all over the web (and probably links in the Anand faq section) about how to do this.

Last but not least, if you aren't sure of what you are doing, and you don't want to gamble on burning up your cpu, then pay somebody $10-$15 at a store to do it for you.

ok i get ya. do u mean 7-15 seconds after i plug the mothervoard in the power supply or just 7-15 seconds after being on the cpu? and if u could point me in the direction of the instrustions to do this, id be more than grateful.

What I mean is that AFTER you have installed the cpu and the heatsink, and plugged the motherboard back in, AND have hit the power button, the cpu is then getting power. AT THAT POINT if the heatsink is not properly installed, then 7-15 seconds later TOAST ! If it is a Pentium 4, ignore this comment, it will just run VERY slow, and maybe burn up days later (if you can stand it that long).

If it is an AMD processor here is a link you should read cover to cover : (Intel cpu's would be very similar in procedure)
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/23986.pdf

Again, when in doubt, pay somebody a little now, or pay somebody else a lot more later (new CPU).

ok, i get ya. thanks a lot everyone. imma try it by myself using all your advice and if i mess up, im gonna buy a new one and get someone to help me. im only 17, and where i work i get 300 bucks every 2 weeks for part time. if i burn the cpu myself, itll only be 1-2 weeks before i can get another, and i will pay someone to do it. it woul dbe a good learning experience, and i doubt i will mess it up anyway. thanks again
