Sharing AOL DSL?

I want my parents to be able to share their web connection via AOL because my mom got in on the recent dell deal. I have an extra Router but would prefer to set them up with ICS over either a crossover cable or USB, is this possible?

Also I know that with a router you can use PPPoE and I know that AOL uses a Winpoet, but will PPPoE on a router work with AOL? Or is it best for me to have one computer sign on to the net and the other to patch into that computer?

this question is answered in dslreports.com faq which says it's not possible to use a router with AOL DSL but can be used with BYOA ...

and from this thread that posed the same question, AOL needs to give you the PPPOE login/password info for it to work, but when asking AOL, customers were told AOL couldnt give out that information..

so looks like ICS route is the only way to go.. at least for now.

sorry i have no experience using ICS, so hope this bump gets some attention..

Thanks that's what I figured, I'm hoping the USB ICS will work because my parents are going to have to set it up, and I can't be there to help so it would be all done over the phone.

Actually my parents have it because it costs them $43 a month because they're locked in at the older price, that and their email address' are already established through AOL. Bottomline quit the thread crapping unless you can help me.

when you say usb, do you mean a usb to usb connector like this (not sure if the only difference between one of these is that it had identical connectors at both ends, but im guessing theres something else that makes it able to create a network. if that were the case, i would think that a company like linksys/belkin would offer something like this)? or a usb network device like this linksys compact network adapter

im guessing the dell system is running win xp home (or pro?), what operating system is the other system running?

Exactly what I'm talking about, and both systems are running XP, one with pro the other home but it should make no difference.

Once I find out for sure then I can start looking for a cheap USB 2 USB cable

Since you say that both computers use XP I have seen it work through ICS though I didn't personally set it up I don't know how difficult it is. If your parents are not in any hurry to share the connection AOL is beta testing a home networking solution that will allow up to 5 computers to share the same connection. Give AOL a call and ask about AOL For Home Networks.

If you have nothing constructive to say then take your crap somewhere else. The only reason not to use AOL is because you don't like it. And remember when you pay $50 to almost every other DSL service each month you do not have the ability to sign on with dial up when you are away from the home.

i was doing some searches on the subject, and from what i gather, ICS wont do the job.. 2 different places mention installing a proxy server on the machine directly connected to the internet, and then have the 2nd computer connect to the dsl connected computer thru the proxy server.

AOL won't normally work with Windows ICS because it maxes out the number of TCP/IP bindings allowed by Windows.

To get around this, run a proxy server on your internet connected machine that is the ICS host. Then have your other machines connect to the ICS host using the proxy server.

A free proxy server that is easy to set up is available from AnalogX at AnalogX Proxy Server

I've tried this and it works.

Well it looks like I didn't luck out

I'm going to give AOL a call to see how their networking AOL prog is coming along and what I would have to do to get it to work. Thanks everybody if nothing else works I'll try the proxy server and if all else fails, earthlink here I come.
