I'm trying to share a file that is around 6 gigs in size with a few people. Dropbox only gives free accounts up to 2 GB. Anyone know of any free and quick way I can setup these files for my friends to download?

*edit* I should add I want it to be private. I don't want to put the files out there in a public domain.

Bittorrent. Upload the .torrent file to a private storage site(I like UbuntuOne), and give them the link.

Buy a web hosting service that offers "unlimited" or more than 6 GB of space. COuld be as cheap as $3/month. Look around, there might be some black friday offers that are insanely cheap.

Upload your file via FTP.

Send the link of the file to your friends - they will all be able to download it. Once they finish, cancel your order.

Set up a local FTP (via HTTP if you have to) and just have them get it directly from you?

What's wrong with bittorrent? This is the kind of job it's ideal for.

Yeah, and it is one of the easier and safer way to do it. I send a lot of pics and videos to my bro in India via torrents. I guess people are just lazy to do this or they have a negative impression on torrents itself.

Also OP, you don't need to upload the files anywhere... you can transfer the files directly from your system to your friends, just keep make sure your system doesn't go offline.

PipeBytes is a great way to send a file to one person. http://host03.pipebytes.com/

If you're sending it to a group of people, I can see where a torrent would make it faster to share, but I've never tried to set that up myself before.

Thanks for the options everyone. I'm going to attempt to use torrents. I can handle it fine, its the person receiving the files that I'm unsure about. I wrote them a little tutorials, so hopefully they will be able to figure it out.

Yea thats the problem with about anything that you can't just go to a website and click the link for...there are lots of options, but usually the people who need to data have no computer skills at all, and you end up having to do it for them anyway.

I've been trying to do something similar for a music project I'm in and I'm the only one with any knowledge on how to do it and trying to get everyone on the same page is a real hassle. Goes to show the whole "cloud" thing is still not ready for prime time.

Upload it to a web host and just give them the http link. If your upload is fast bittorrent works too, but if it's slow you are better off to upload the file to the host that way you only have to upload it once. Assuming everyone keeps seeding then a torrent may work ok but you want to look at the worse case scenario which is person 1 downloads, stops torrent, person 2 downloads, stops it, etc...

If you don't have any web host whatsoever there's plenty of plans out there for cheap. Even a crappy oversold one that's like bucks per month would work for this. Could come in handy for any other future file transfers of this nature, too.
