My first instinct was Yakuza but seeing that makeshift gun makes me think just some random nutjob. Maybe affiliated with Aleph (aka Aum Shinrikyo, the nuts that did the Sarin gas attack).

According to Japanese investigators, the suspect, a former Navy man, said his motive was personal.

Shinzo Abe was hit twice in the neck, with one of the shotgun bullets traveling to Abe's heart, according to Japanese news sources.

The former PM had zero chance to survive. Police knew that Abe had passed from his wounds because he was not breathing as they rushed him to a hospital.

He resigned in 2020 as prime minister because of health.
But wiki says he was a
Member of the House of Representatives
from 20 October 1996 – 8 July 2022 (his death).

So he was a member of house of Rep while he was PM?
And after he resigned because of health, he stayed on as a Rep?

Yeah, if I'd had to guess which recently resigned/ejected world leader would be shot dead, the ex-PM of Japan would definitely not have been on the list.

Have they said whether there any political motivation to this at all? Or was it some weird motivation that only made sense to the killer?
