Hey guys and gals:
i am looking to rebuild for the first time in about 4 years. i have been out of the game so to speak. could anyone point to a resource that details the history of cpus since about 4 years ago. The last time i checked Amd had Socket A. now there is socket 939 and others. So, it is a bit confusing. i want to build a system (mainly the CPU, Mobo and ram) that will not be used for gaming just Home office stuff but i do not want to be to far behind the curve. Any pointers will be appreciated.

Get this mobo for $73. Biostar TFORCE 4

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820134045
Kingston 1GB DDR2 667 Ram for $84.

And this X2 3800+ for $170.

Or you could also go with this CPU if you don't mind going Single-Core:
http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Shopping/shoppingcart.asp?submit=view
Athlon 64 3000+ for $80

And since you're not going to be gaming, here's a good video card for $90(unless you don't need it, of course. It also has some gaming power just in case you want to play the occasional game sometimes.

Total: $435 after Fedex Express Saver Shipping(with the X2 3800 and video card).

Or $340 if you don't need a video card(with the X2 3800).

Or $250 with the 3000+ and without the video card.

Or $355 or somewhere around there with the 3000+ and the video card.

Eh...

s754 -> first desktop K8 (Athlon 64) platform, single-channel.
s939 -> second desktop K8 platform, dual-channel memory and dual-core CPUs. Discontinued by end of year
socket AM2 -> Third generation K8 platform, DDR2 ram, energy-efficient CPUs, quad-core eventually

LGA775 -> Intel's platform.

If you're looking to buy a PC, look into Core 2 Duo CPUs if you have the cash (they start at $190)

Well if you are going budget wise, a 939 system would not be a bad way to go. I say this because you only mention AMD products so I will assume that is what you want. Any of the single core athlon 64s can be had for dirt cheap now, most are under $100. The X2's (dual core) just had a major price drop and can all be priced around $150-250. Basically as far as I know there are little differences between the 754, 939 and AM2. Basically the 754 and 939 are similar,the 754 being the older one. The 939 has basically Dual Channel capability and better overclocking chips. The AM2 chips are the most rescent and provided support for DDR2. Right about now AM2 CPUs are the same price as 939's, a little lower actually. I am not sure about the mobo though. Let me know what your budget is and I can tell you what to expect.

if you end up going AM2 or 939 I highly suggest the Biostar tforce 6100 motherboards. The 6100 graphics are really good. I played Guild Wars at full settings and it ran flawlessly. Not to mention it has every overclocking feature you could want, if you plan on doing that.

You picked the right time to upgrade. AMD and Intel just slashed prices. The Intel conroes are the best performing cpus at the moment.
