Hello everyone,

I ordered a CD-RW and it started making clicking noises with different CD's, so I RMA'd it.

The new one I got ALSO CLICKS with different CD's!!

I'm pretty sure the answer is "HELL NO", but I want to make sure.

Did I get really unlucky and get 2 bad CD-RW's in a row? or should CD-RW's click every once in a while?

What do you mean, click? My Plextor 40x scsi cdrom clicks every time it gets detected by my scsi card. Does it have issues reading discs?

I don't think it should be of concern. I've had several cdrws that have clicked upon startup or after you insert a disc.

Thanks for the responses guys.

So you guys are saying that the clicking does not matter?

I do not have SCSI.
I'm is using a regular IDE setup.
It is a light "thud" click sound that can occur singly or repeatedly while the disc is spinning up.
It does not occur every time a disc is put in.

I asked another of person who I consider to be decently knowledgable about PCs, and he said to get RMA the drive because it could mean that it's getting ready to die due to loose parts, etc.

I would appreciate knowing why you say I should not worry.

Thank you.

Oops,

I forgot to add that it can also occur a little after the disc is being used.
In other words, after the initial spin up.

I hope this is not rude, but I'd really appreciate knowing why I should not worry about the clicking.

Its probably the thing starting up. My drive clicks too but ive had it for 4 years now and its still running so I wouldnt worry about it. Something to worry would be a metal grinding sound or a crack, certainly not a click. That sounds to me like the plastic touching.

If it starts to refuse to read or write discs, then I would RMA it. Until then, don't worry about the noise. This isn't a hard drive where precious data is stored.

My MEMOREX 52x/24x/52x clicks when I load a CD in it.

I think the clicks are created when the the hub is not perfectly aligned with the center hole in the CD.

It may click a few times, but it always spins up fine for me.
