Sitting on my basement bathroom floor holding a hose over my toilet draining my sump pump pit because my 75 feet of shrinkable house can't build up enough pressure from the portable sump pump to extend far enough.
Wish i had a regular house right about now. Been sitting here for 20 minutes already.
Then i get the joys of putting in a new sump pump.

Dad stopped over and bought me a regular hose. Still taking forever but the discharge is about 10 times greater.

Draining a sump pump pit may be equivalent to draining your entire water table.
Good luck; you may be there a while.

Yeah usually you just pull the sump out of the pit and drop the new one in. Depending on your water table you might not be able to drain the pit. If it hasn't drained in just a few minutes I'd think it is safe to say it isn't going to really drain.

It took some 4.5 hours to finally get the water below the intake pipe so I could make the swap. I'm guessing it was some 5,400 gallons of water that was pumped out. Just an insane amount.
Reason I was running the portable was that the battery backup was running constantly and having a difficult time keeping up. Water was at the lip of the pit and if I were to start disconnecting the outtake pipe to swap right away, I would have had some serious leakage into the basement.

Installed a 1HP pump that displaces 5,550 gallons per hour. No longer have to worry. Was a fast process once i was able to make the swap. It's the damn initial pumping with the portable that took so long.

Why did you have to empty the sump pit to replace the pump? I could swear when my father in law and I did it it only took about half an hour and we basically just cut the pvc and put the sump pit in and added and cemented new pvc.

IF you read his post he was right at the verge of flooding. Rather than risk any problems he chose wisely, IMO. Murphy can come along and kick your arse when you tempt him too much.

Better yet, buy a Fernco Coupling and you never have to cut the PVC again.

Yea, I was at the lip and would have had to turn off the battery backup pump to install the pipe on the new pump since they are connected in a Y to the outlet. Didn't dare take a chance in water going all over. Carpeted basement, have been living in the house for 2 weeks. Played it safe.

Nice save!

I can tell you that having to remove all of that carpet and padding sucks big time. Just finished doing that last night.
