Nope, the Republicans control the House, Senate, and the White House. The Republicans don't need a single Democrat vote to pass a budget or CR. The only reason the government is shut down is because Republicans chose to shut it down.

Wrong, they need votes from the democrats in the senate

TROOP PAY
Although active duty troops and Guard and Reservists on active duty orders are expected to show-up for work during a shutdown, they will not get paid unless Congress passes a separate piece of legislation to do so. Such a bill was awaiting action from the House and Senate Saturday.

Without that legislation, known as the Pay Our Military Act, troops will receive partial paychecks Feb. 1 only for days worked prior to Jan. 20.

Guard and Reserve drill days scheduled for during the shutdown will likely be canceled, while those at drill when the shutdown started are likely being sent home. Guardsmen and Reservists should check with their units for more information.

Yep troops will get paid, it’s just a political talking point. The CR is a ridiculous concept that shouldn’t exist. Find a solution for those here illegally, DACA isn’t it. Shouldn’t shut the government down over it.

The Republicans already use it when Mitch finds it convenient and advantageous. In this case, Mitch decided that shutting down the government was more convenient and advantageous to Mitch than passing a budget or CR.
Um no, let me know when he used it to pass legislation.

Nope, Mitch can ram 50+1 through the Senate whenever his party chooses. The idea that the nuclear option is nuclear is a quaint leftover of a more civilized age (pre-Mitch).

Nice cherry picking of data from the article.

In that poll, Dems come out the worst...marginally worst, but still the worst.

Also, a majority of Anericans do not support a shutdown over DACA, which means a majority support DACA independent of the govt shutting down. A majority do not support the govt shutting down over DACA.

That is like saying a majority of Americans oppose Russian interference in our election, but that does not mean a majority supports going to war over it.
Yawn, GOP controls all branches of the governed. They will be blamed.

Budget reconciliation. Arcane rule, but still an existing Senate rule. The "Byrd rule"
Exactly. The Republicans can pass bills with 50+1 anytime they choose. They chose to shut down the government instead. It's a bit different than in 2013 in that this shut down is the result of Republican infighting. These folks are such total assholes they can't even make deals amongst themselves.

It was the Democrats under Schumer that first used the Nuclear option, Republicans used it for the USSC when forced, now you think it's a good idea of Republicans use it again for legislation?

It was a push poll. The government didn't get shut down over DACA. The government got shut down because Republicans are incapable of governing.
The Republicans are incapable of governing and the government got shut down because both parties dug in over DACA

Mitch will use it when it suits him. Let's not pretend it is any longer a big deal. In this instance, Mitch chose to shut down the government rather than lead his party to pass a bill.

Nice to see we agree on it, i'd love Mitch to pass more extreme legislation on strict party lines votes. Let's all hope it happens.

Nope, DACA is the side show. The Republicans could have and still can pass a bill w/o DACA and w//o Democrats. The Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House and they need to start doing their Constitutional duty and pass a budget. Every Dem could head to Mar-a-lago for a beach party and it would not impact the Republicans' inability to govern.

DACA only comes into play when the Republican leadership begs the Democrats to help them out of the mess they created for themselves by nominating and electing nutjob members who refuse to even consider intra-party compromises.

As I said they will get paid there is no way congress is not going to get them paid.

Well technically for the military (and civil servants) to get paid now or retroactively requires the republican controller House, Senate and Presidency to pass legislation to that affect.

Do you think losing the benefit of blaming the democrats for “withholding” their pay is worth paying the military? I’m actually not sure if it’s worth it to them this time.

FYI i served with people from other countries who were still citizens of the country they were from they joined the US armed forces.

Then feel free to tell them to fuck off and go back to their shithole country.

G/L with that.

It's not just pay, delaying the budget forces delayed maintenance, inability to long term plan and impairs readiness.

Seems like particularly bad timing when we are threatening war in NK while we have sailors who can't sail the boats without crashing into cargo ships and killing dozens of crewmates.

Why Military Readiness Takes a Hit Every Time Congress Delays the Budget

"I am often asked what the public can do to thank the military. Here is my answer: Write your Congressman. Demand a budget on time."

Republicans are anti-government. They run on this ideology. They stir up their base on this ideology. They win elections on this ideology. So why would anyone be surprised that when they are in power the government shuts down?
And then we have that republican base, the anti government Trump rally folks that have absolutely no idea how government affects their life. How those dots connect.
They hate government until something they rely on ceases, stops, goes away. THEN they cry out, but still have no idea how one is linked to the other.
They never connect that their food stamps come from the government, and Medicare, and Medicaid, and their social security check.
Or can they understand why it is when they pack the kids into the truck and drive off to their favorite picnic park the sign that greets them displays CLOSED.
They hate government yet have no idea what government is and how it plays in their life.
NOT A CLUE!

And this is so obvious more now than ever.
While republican after republican stand up in front of the camera's blaming democrats for the shutdown, you can see the joy in their face and detect the gloat in their voice that they the republicans in congress along with their republican president succeeded in shutting down that dreaded evil American government.
And the number one republican cheering this on is.... Donald Trump.
His base wants this. They elected Donald Trump to do exactly this.
Trump is happy. His base is happy. Paul Ryan is happy. Mitch McConnell is happy.
Make no mistake about THAT.....
Tom Hanks is a good actor, but for republicans in congress to pretend they are concerned the government has shut down? THAT is Oscar worthy entertainment.

Let's even back that up a bit. The new fiscal year started in October.

So what has Trump spent his time doing?
- Flailing on Obamacare
- Apologizing for Nazis and the Confederacy
- lighting the fuse on DACA and nuclear war in NK
- Shitting on gold star families
- Hating in Aids-infected, hut-dwelling shitholers
- lots of golf
- voting himself millions in tax cuts

Doing the basic functions of govt?
Meh, too boring. Let's watch shark week.
